A Fox News poll released Thursday found that Biden enjoys an 18-point lead over his closest challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) sitting in third place.
Biden was supported by 35 percent of likely Democratic primary voters in the poll, up from 31 percent in March, while Sanders sat at 17 percent, a slight dip from March when he registered support from 23 percent of voters

(7,447 posts)her support didn't collapse so far that she didn't come in a very close second.
I suspect Biden will come back to the field a bit, but the odds are that he will be in the top two at the end are pretty strong.

(7,554 posts)I never said Sanders would be in the final group. Don.t think he will be. Others will pass him, just as Obama did. Polls now don't mean much.

(7,554 posts)I'll make it simple: polls this far out are meaningless. That's the point. The 2007 polls, as well as many in the past, prove that, whether people like it or not.

(25,525 posts)19 points ahead of one person is one thing; a similar lead over a field of 22+ is quite another.
Comparisons with prior cycles don't really tell us anything of substance. This one is pretty much unprecedented.

(7,554 posts)Bill Clinton was in the bottom tier of almost 20 candidates in the 1991 polls. The year Jimmy Carter won there were 18 candidates and Dukakis won with a field of 17 candidates. So, no having this many candidates doesn't change the fact that non-incumbents leading the early polls in the Democratic presdiential race haven't won since John Kennedy, who was actually just tied with Stevenson in the early polls. They are 0 for 5.
I'm not sure why people are so reluctant to know this. It's just historical fact and should tell us that while polls may be play a role in positioning early, they are worthless as a predictor for the eventual nominee - unless you want to know who likley won't be the nominee. Added a link:
