Joe Biden's campaign of limited exposure: How long can he keep it up?

Washington Posr

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) plans to enjoy ice cream with New Hampshire voters to celebrate Memorial Day. He won’t be far from former Maryland congressman John Delaney, another presidential candidate, who’s in the midst of his 19th trip to the state and plans an itinerary that includes four barbecues, one parade and a wreath-laying.

In Iowa, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) is rolling through the cornfields in an RV, while Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) unveils a “Family Bill of Rights” and tours an ethanol plant.

And here’s former vice president Joe Biden’s agenda for the holiday weekend, according to his campaign: “Joe Biden has no public events scheduled.”

Those seven words are becoming familiar for the Biden team. Aside from a campaign swing right after announcing his candidacy, Biden has kept his head down while his rivals rush from state to state to state. Even when he has held public events, they have included only a handful of questions from voters or reporters.

primary today, I would vote for:

You should be asking the Biden campaign. They're setting the strategy.

Right now, in a field of 24 candidates, Biden has somewhere between 35-40% of those polled. That is a commanding lead, this early in the campaign season. We're at the end of a three-day holiday weekend, so folks are not watching so much news just now. They're doing other things, really.

Campaigning costs money and takes energy. Biden is, apparently, saving both right now. As long as his poll numbers hold, there's no real reason to be out campaigning hard at the moment.

Don't worry, though. You'll be seeing plenty of Joe Biden. When he will launch an all-out campaign effort remains to be seen. Meanwhile, all of the candidates who are currently polling in the single digits are feeling the need to be out on the stump as much as possible. Will that help them? Perhaps.

It's early days yet in the Democratic primary campaign season. The list of candidates is probably complete, now. Initial poll results have been pretty stable.

Things will ramp up this summer and fall. Right now, most people are not really thinking hard about the primaries. There's lots of other stuff to do. But, State Fair season is about to start. Schools are letting out for the summer. There will be plenty of campaign opportunities coming up.

Truth be told I’d like to see more of Joe but that’s because I want comforting. I think the campaign is just meting it out and planning to have the message become big and serious in the late summer/early fall. And I think they might be watching the 45 shot show, the Democrats’ response, and planning accordingly behind the scenes.

At least that’s what I’d be doing!

such as “fundraising, one-on-one calls, policy development and the building of a campaign infrastructure.”

While the other candidates are out there in public working for votes, Biden assumes he already has them. While the other candidates are out there talking public policies, Biden counts on voters imagining they know what his policies are.

Campaigning is for the little people, that's what that sounds like.

the kind of grueling campaign schedule necessary to win a presidential election - a 78 year old man LIKELY can coast his way to winning re-election to Senate (where he is essentially running unopposed against a sacrificial lamb); he MIGHT be able to coast his way to winning the Democratic presidential nomination against a weak field; but he's NOT going to be able to coast his way to defeating an incumbent president - it's going to be a grueling ordeal and men much younger than Biden have found it to be very tiring. I certainly would like to see some assurances that Biden can still campaign at that level before he's locked in as the nominee.

he is already a known figure .

the problem for him would be if it gives someone else a chance to convince voters to support them.

This notion that one needs to be carrying on “campaigning” for a full year and a half for a job that lasts four years is simply insane.

Does anyone expect some surprise “Joe Biden news”? Is there something we didn’t learn about him during eight years as VP and some forty years in the senate that’s gonna make headlines this weekend?

Maybe it’s just a side effect of growing up and living in Delaware but, good golly, it’s Joe Biden. What on earth do you need to know today?
