Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWaPo: Biden's Republican VP remark is part of what attracts some voters to him
Analysis by Eugene Scott, who reported for CNN before working for the Washington Post:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/12/31/bidens-republican-vp-remark-is-part-what-attracts-some-voters-him/
Some of the responses failed to take Bidens statement into full context. The chances of the former vice president choosing a member of the GOP to join him on the Democratic Party ticket is low. He told those gathered that his running mate would need to share his priorities and be on the same page as him. And he admitted that he cant think of a single Republican who fits that bill.
But the fact that Biden would not firmly reject the possibility of sharing a ticket with someone from the right is a reminder of a core piece of the former lawmakers political worldview: Biden thinks Republicans are capable of helping him make America great for everyone.
Biden is well-known for his ability to work across the aisle. The relationships he built during his time in the Senate have shaped his view of the GOP as people with whom he disagrees politically but can still find common ground. But in the current political era, in which Republican lawmakers are known mostly for their loyalty to Trump, Biden has attracted the scorn of liberals who think he is naive or simply ill-equipped to be the person liberals want to lead America away from Trumpism.
As vocal as the Democratic base often is, the group may make up less of a percentage of the left and particularly the voters Biden hopes to win than some believe. Only 28 percent of Americans consider themselves Democrats, according to Gallup and that includes moderate Democrats.
If Biden is going to return to Washington, this time as president, its not likely to be solely because of the support of the left, which right now is more likely to back Sens. Bernie Sanders (I.-Vt.) or Elizabeth Warren (D.-Mass). And Biden seems to believe that the best way to get Trump out of office is by running a campaign that holds out hope that there are Republicans who will find his vision for America more attractive than that of the current administration.

(25,499 posts)I wish (some) people would realize that he's been running a general election campaign since day one, and that he says things that a not-insignificant chunk of the voting public wants to hear.
Polls consistently show that the majority of people want bipartisanship and not vitriolic partisanship. Those are the people he's targeting.
For the record, there's zero chance he actually selects a Republican.

(62 posts)As much as I like Bernie
I would not frame is as a rock bottom for Joe. I might ask something like
how did reaching across the isle work for you when you were with Obama?
Then lets talk about policy. How about Freedom from Illness (or Healthcare for alllike every other industrialized nation on the planet) I could go on.

(46,769 posts)Not exactly a good quality if you poll the Democratic demographics that were used as bargaining chips during the Centrist years.
I just don't understand why we fail to connect deregulation with all the problems that come afterwards. People and industries should pay for the overreaches that stole the future from so many ordinary Americans, but no one has ever brought them to task. Which is why some are still extolling the virtues of a leader who would make the same decisions, I suppose.

(46,769 posts)of all the bad financial decisions made in Congress that jeopardizes savings and investments. It's almost like our financial institutions are allowed to create pyramid systems that are permitted to harvest and leech our savings, before they crash. While they put their wealthy investors in an "A" category that is protected.

(3,855 posts)Which is why running a centrist again is probably a really really bad idea.
And I no, I don't' just mean 2016. I am not just talking about Trump (though Trump has shown he can win against a centrist)

indicate otherwise. Especially polls in swing states that are essential to a win.

(24,123 posts)can drive the base and Independents to the polls in droves. We The People can also trust President Sanders to always keep his promises to us... there will be no pivoting or equivocating.
Joe's mild approach, with his moderate incrementalist, return to normalcy, reach across the aisle, and consider Repigs for his VP, is not going to cut it this election cycle.

(3,855 posts)I saw no evidence to back this up but I don't own a subscription to WaPo so I will have to assume it simply wasn't included in the very long except from the article in the OP.
nd even though the argument is that Biden would appeal to red-state voters, we will skip over that Sanders hs been shown to appeal to red-state voters (a fact that is often casually dismissed here though I guess when it's Biden it's relevant again)

Ok...
But I think we may be acting as if that comment about picking a Republican VP happened in a vacuum
Maybe we should also recall that time Biden said he hoped the Republicans didn't' lose too badly.
http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/12/joe-biden-gop-view.html
OR that time Biden said the Republicans only act they way they do because of Trump
https://newrepublic.com/article/155749/joe-bidens-frantic-defense-status-quo
OR that time Biden waxed nostalgia for guys like Strom Thurmond.
And there are other examples we could find. Individually some maybe most can be rationalized away. But together, they start to form a picture
Wait, wasn't there a recent thread here attacking sanders, claiming since he wasn't really a Democrat that he wouldn't' choose a Democrat as his VP even though there was no indication that was a possibility?
Well, this may not be the time to mention there might be a double standard at work.

The Hill-HarrisX poll released Monday shows that 33 percent of GOP respondents named Biden as the Democratic candidate who came the closest to sharing their political views.
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg received the second-highest support among Republican voters at 30 percent and 28 percent thought Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) better aligned with their views.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg both garnered 26 percent of respondents who said the candidates closely shared their values.
Biden, the front-runner in most national polls, has long sought to position himself as the most electable challenger to President Trump.

(25,686 posts)Because they have no idea what Republicans have done, blame it on both parties. Saying something doesn't mean you'll do it. Geez, usually people think politicians pander and say what'll get them elected, but now with Joe every offhand comment is carved into stone as exactly what he'll do.
