A deceptively edited video of Joe Biden signals what's coming

A video that was edited in a monumentally dishonest fashion to make Joe Biden sound racist just circulated all over Twitter. Distressingly, some reporters and people with large Twitter followings tweeted out the video, before others drew their attention to the full context, causing them to backtrack
.
It is simply incredible that anyone in the business of informing people would circulate a video like this before verifying the full context. Have we really learned nothing in the past few years? One hopes this episode will be taken as a cautionary tale of what’s coming.

The video in question, which your humble blogger will not link to, shows only 19 seconds of a 13-minute monologue that Biden delivered in New Hampshire. Biden had been asked by an audience member to speak about his work and his agenda on sexual assault and domestic violence....

One of the original purveyors of this disinformation (again, we won’t link) is still pretending this was an honest depiction, and is accusing those who supplied the corrective context of being the “real” purveyors of disinformation. Take this as a glimpse of what’s coming.....

All this is a sign of what the Democratic nominee could face. It’s no wonder that some Democrats are worried we might even see “deepfake” media manipulations. Imagine such ultra-sophisticated video distortions of Biden’s rambles, retweeted by Trump, and perhaps even by reporters.

Trump views disinformation not as a scourge to be combated in the name of protecting our democracy, but as an ally. In this particular case, Trump has not retweeted the video of Biden — yet. But let’s try to learn from this.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

to be on the left but they are not.

Anyway, bad times ahead if we see a repeat...oops, cant say that can I.

One of the reasons I want Liz is I dont think they can do this to her the way they can Joe. I am for either of course, and it will be tougher for that group I mentioned to oppose her given her positions, they will of course but it will be obvious what they are really all about.

BTW, my comment above will appear in thousands of places now*...not because of me, but this will be a MEME for a few months by some to work against Joe, pretend to be SINCERE liberal democrats like myself expressing an opinion but really saying this to attack Joe...sigh

*i dont mean they will see mine and do it I mean they are doing it already

.... interchange? Then listen to the bad edit? And try to remember where it came in the 15 minute video? Can someone just tell me in words what Biden said (the shortest bit that will do the job) and explain what the badly edited video took out?

We badly need a SHORT easy to share explanation that gives the specifics, not abstractions.

19. Deceptive video targeting Biden is a sign of things to come

Jan 2020

From the Maddow Blog http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/deceptive-video-targeting-biden-sign-things-come

After noting that even some media professionals initially fell for the wildly misleading Biden story, Greg added, “One hopes this episode will be taken as a cautionary tale of what’s coming.”

I think that’s absolutely right, though I’d add one related point. It’s not exactly a secret that many political players have launched an aggressive campaign to discredit independent news organizations. There’s some isolated noise about this on the left – encouraging people not to believe “corporate” media, for example – but it’s the right that’s obviously fueling the broader campaign.

The implications of these efforts are sweeping, but they’re especially relevant in instances like these.

Under normal circumstances, if a leading presidential candidate were to say something brazenly racist at an event, the public could expect reporters from major news organizations to report the story and alert voters to what happened. But when Americans are urged not to trust “the media,” it becomes more difficult for some news consumers to know what to believe.

This is true of the fact-check reports that set the record straight, but also of the larger phenomenon. Some may have seen the deceptive Biden video, for example, assumed it was legitimate, and concluded that news organizations didn’t run with the story because of a scheme to “protect” a Democratic presidential candidate. Such thinking would be consistent with Donald Trump’s worldview: the president routinely tells his followers that “fake” news outlets have hatched an elaborate conspiracy to undermine him and his allies, while aiding his rivals.

It leads many news consumers to trust nonsense, rather than journalism, and it’s a problem that’s not going away anytime soon.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
