Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThe assassination of Soleimani has been a game changer for me.
While previously interested in the policy positions of the remaining Democratic candidates, I find myself no longer much interested in what they have to say about education, healthcare, taxes, etc. Primarily because I know without a doubt that any front-running Democrat in the White House will promote progressive policies I can support and will espouse a few policies I am lukewarm or even cold to. But overall, will be working in the best interest of the electorate, not themselves.
Traditional strategies advise candidates to focus on three primary areas of concern. Here are the three areas I want to hear the candidates talk about.
1) Protecting the U.S. Constitution and ensuring the rule of law applies to everyone as equally as possible, including the POTUS - especially the POTUS. I want reassurance that, as president, they will restore our government to the norms required to protect our representative democracy and labor to eliminate as much corruption as is possible.
2) Securing our elections. I want reassurance that, as president, they will do everything within their power to make voting easy and auditable. I want to look at all of my elected representatives with confidence the majority of their constituents voted them in to office.
3) Addressing climate change. I want reassurance that, as president, they will advocate furiously for policies, regulations, treaties, etc. that take this crisis seriously and recognize we are not at the beginning of the fight for human survival, but rapidly approaching the tipping point - if we haven't passed it already.
I already know that, as Democrats, their judicial appointments will likely be fine with me and their social policies will likely align with my political philosophy.
I want to know that their highest priority is preserving our country for the future - so we can wrestle with all the other policy questions in the years to come. I honestly don't know who is the best person to accomplish that. It seems way more than one individual can shoulder. We all knew a Trump administration would wreak havoc and leave chaos in its wake.
I'm now back to Undecided. Sigh.

(2,447 posts)...no matter who we say we endorse now, we will all be voting for the Democratic candidate who survives the primaries. Period. That is all.

(54 posts)I was already leaning towards Buttigieg but I didn't expect him to be that much better than the senators. His town halls, press gaggles and interviews have been of an astonishing quality. Meanwhile my second choice Klobuchar doesn't seem very interested in addressing it at all, which doesn't inspire much confidence.
