(7,702 posts)The Daily Beast first reported the comments, which surfaced from a column the leading 2020 Democratic presidential candidate wrote over three decades ago for the Newark Post.
"We are all too familiar with the stories of welfare mothers driving luxury cars and leading lifestyles that mirror the rich and famous," the column read. "Whether they are exaggerated or not, these stories underlie a broad social concern that the welfare system has broken down that it only parcels out welfare checks and does nothing to help the poor find productive jobs."

(67,782 posts)...and way out of context.
One needs to know exactly what Biden REALLY said, the complete sentence:
STORIES! Then he goes on even more, with "Whether they are exaggerated or not...."
Then he went on further, which is not presented in the article. You're falling for Sirota's false representation of what he really said.

(7,702 posts)Joe should have made that clear when he used that very racist language, while making his point.

(7,388 posts)But that still changes the narrative that Biden warned about welfare mothers when he was instead warning about the broad social concern that the welfare system has broken down.
Thanks,

It's filthy politics, and certainly not the politics that a "progressive" campaign should be engaging in.

(3,256 posts)who cherry-picked a sentence out of context and purposely attacked with nefarious and pernicious intentions.
This does not help Bernie. Biden was a hand-picked VP by Barack Obama and thus thoroughly vetted by him. Barack Obama has a beloved, admired and exalted spot in Democrats' hearts and especially the African-American community.
It may also anger African Americans because it is portrayed that only African Americans are the recipients of welfare when statistics show that Whites outnumber African Americans by a few multiples when welfare recipients are tabulated.

(7,388 posts)or not caring what the article actually says. In other words its propaganda pure and simple to a populist movement that will push facts aside if it has to achieve its goal.

(581 posts)What's the context? Bernie Sanders was criticising the racist system of the time ... but the use of the n-word could easily be used against him because a) that book came out in 1997 and republished in 2015 and b) his use of the word was to explicitly describe a group of people
I don't believe any democrat has used it against Bernie. Only right-wingers.

(1,812 posts)needs to formulate a set of bold programs that, if enacted, will greatly improve the lives of the American people .. He needs to focus on the bread and butter issues .. Stagnant Incomes and crushing Healthcare costs are eating people alive .More than half of the Country is living paycheck to paycheck ..If he is the nominee and doesn't address these overarching problems , he will lose to Trump.... Trump is a far superior "entertainer" than Joe on the stump .. Hell have to win on the issues
