The Daily Beast first reported the comments, which surfaced from a column the leading 2020 Democratic presidential candidate wrote over three decades ago for the Newark Post.

"We are all too familiar with the stories of welfare mothers driving luxury cars and leading lifestyles that mirror the rich and famous," the column read. "Whether they are exaggerated or not, these stories underlie a broad social concern that the welfare system has broken down — that it only parcels out welfare checks and does nothing to help the poor find productive jobs."

Former Vice President Joe Biden warned of "welfare moms driving luxury cars" and leading wealthy lifestyles in a 1988 newspaper column to highlight Congress's success in passing a welfare reform package.

...and way out of context.

One needs to know exactly what Biden REALLY said, the complete sentence:

"We are all too familiar with the stories of welfare mothers driving luxury cars and leading lifestyles that mirror the rich and famous."

STORIES! Then he goes on even more, with "Whether they are exaggerated or not...."

Then he went on further, which is not presented in the article. You're falling for Sirota's false representation of what he really said.

“For a hundred years, the white workers of the South were the most exploited white workers in America. They were paid the lowest wages, they endured the worst working conditions, their housing was abysmal, their kids went to the most backward schools, and very few could send their children to college. But what did they have? They were given ‘niggers’ to hate and look down on, ‘niggers’ who couldn’t vote, drink at their water fountains, use the same bathrooms, or sit up front in the buses or movie theaters.”

who cherry-picked a sentence out of context and purposely attacked with nefarious and pernicious intentions.

This does not help Bernie. Biden was a hand-picked VP by Barack Obama and thus thoroughly vetted by him. Barack Obama has a beloved, admired and exalted spot in Democrats' hearts and especially the African-American community.

It may also anger African Americans because it is portrayed that only African Americans are the recipients of welfare when statistics show that Whites outnumber African Americans by a few multiples when welfare recipients are tabulated.

What's the context? Bernie Sanders was criticising the racist system of the time ... but the use of the n-word could easily be used against him because a) that book came out in 1997 and republished in 2015 and b) his use of the word was to explicitly describe a group of people

I don't believe any democrat has used it against Bernie. Only right-wingers.

Biden campaign national press secretary Jamal Brown pointed out the caveat "Whether they are exaggerated or not," which leads the column. Brown suggests the then-Delaware senator had expressed some doubt the stereotype was true.

"As he wrote in 1988, we as a society have an obligation to help the less fortunate out of poverty through job training and educational and other opportunities," Brown told the Daily Beast.
