(17,990 posts)I don't give two shits what he's hopeful about. Whatever he's hopeful about most likely isn't based on anything in or even near reality. And if it is, that's purely by random chance. Then again, your guy is polling best so far against the orange shit stain. So whoever the nominee ends up being, we close ranks together and kick his fucking ass.

(4,341 posts)If anything Bernie has that is very good is that he is very quick of mind, and he does not give a crap to hit back, it actually comes automatically to him. I still laugh at the moment when Tim Ryan attacked him during the debates and Bernie left him with his mouth open, and I have not seen any of the other candidates that have been able to shut him down, I don't foresee the idiot being able to do it if Bernie wins the nomination. I may add that most of the time when he responds, and I have to think it is unintentional, but there is wit behind it and people end up laughing, that would make the idiot into a pretzel.

(3,634 posts)Except for Pete B, all our serious candidates are Boomers. And they are old. But Bernie at least acknowledges that this is part of the problem, even if he is part of that problem himself, and he is at least making noises about passing the baton. For someone his age Bernie's rhetoric is very forward-looking.

(35,780 posts)He just has that way about him.
Trump probably thinks he can beat Bernie, but what he's not counting on is the fact that there was a substantial percentage of people who voted Trump when they couldn't get Bernie in the last election.* These are people who would swing back to Bernie in a heartbeat if given the choice.
I can hardly imagine a Trump/Bernie debate without Bernie laughing in Trump's face. You know it's going to happen.
on edit: I checked the figures and it's 12% who went for Trump because they couldn't get Bernie.
Another factor to consider is that Bernie is stronger with the younger voters. There was an article in the WSJ that said that Trump's white working class voters have declined by 2.3 per cent. Those are voters he has to go out and get new, not so easy when you're being impeached and you just effed up royally by assassinating the #2 guy from another government.
Quote from article: "Trump has a certain hill to climb, and this suggests that the hill gets a little steeper, said Ruy Teixeira, a demographer with the States of Change project, which provided assessments of the 2020 electorate."
Also:
Projections by Mr. Teixeira and his colleagues find that the declining presence of working-class whites as eligible voters, if considered in isolation from other factors, would be enough to tip Michigan and Pennsylvania from narrow Trump wins into narrow Democratic wins, while producing the barest of margins in favor of Democrats in Wisconsin. Mr. Trump won each state by less than 1 percentage point, or a combined 77,000 votes.

How substantial? They literally voted for Trump because they couldnt get Bernie and would not vote for Hillary?
Holy shit.

(3,855 posts)while there were Bernie Sanders voters who switched to Trump, as has been pointed out these don't constitute anything unusual. More Hillary Clinton supporters went to McCain in 2008. But no one remembers that because Obama could inspire people t get to the polls. If Sanders is the nominee, expect a certain % of Biden and Buttigieg supporters to go to Trump in the general. Though I expect it to not matter for the same reason it didn't' matter in 2008.
I think it's the people who stayed home in 2016 that will matter more. Ultimately those people are why Clinton lost. She couldn't' convince them to vote. (and for the record, yes I put the blame for that on Clinton)
Sanders is specifically targeting them and it looks like it's working. Not just with young people but with red-state voters who feel abandoned by the Democratic party.
Sanders has always been able to drum up enthusiasm. And unlike 2016, he has built up the infrastructure.

(11,546 posts)that's pretty good news! A weird crossover though. I wouldn't in a million years go the other way. It's possible that it's those working class white folks you mentioned.
If Bernie wins the nomination and can cut into that portion of Trump's voters, he could take him down. Bernie will still need to work on the older folks though. Also he has work to do in the black community, especially the older voters there too.

(4,341 posts)And we are supposed to believe that he is afraid of Biden but glad Bernie is a prospect to being the nominee?
So, we can't believe anything trump says, unless of course it fits our narrative?
I really hope people are not being conned into believing that republicans are afraid of Biden, they are not, they have so much on Biden and they will bring it all if the time comes, I think they are salivating at the prospect.

(14,907 posts)Trump has rudy and barr running sround the world to manufacture dirt because why?
Russia is supporting bernie on state tv, why?
No conservative outlet is focussing on anyone but biden, why?
Its NOT because they are afraid of bernie. I believe they know they can beat him.
As for dirt, bernie has never really been in the barrel, and hasnt reacted well when challenged.
So yeah, people do believe trump is afraid of running against biden.
And yes, he is dumb enough to say that on twitter. He actually admits quite a bit on twitter. Between all the lies and distortions.

(35,780 posts)At the time, Biden appeared to be more of a threat to him than any other candidate. Biden was ahead of other Dems in the polls and trump believed, like a lot of people do, that the polls at that time would tell the story. That's the way it looked at the time.
Second, he had this juicy story with Biden's son sitting on the board of Burisma. He thought he could do a lot with that story. Sadly, he has and he will continue to do so, even though credible people have said on national TV that the story is discredited. Regardless, it's hard to convince your average voter that a person with no experience in the industry is deserving of the payments Hunter Biden received. Why Hunter Biden? Why not somebody who knows the industry?
Then, of course, there are the other sordid matters from HB's past which I will not mention here. Trump, who wallows in the world of hookers, is real comfortable slinging that kind of stuff around. He thought he hit a goldmine with that story and he's not going to give it up, truth be damned.
For additional insight on how trump operates, see this story by Politico's editor in chief:

(3,855 posts)Back in 2016 Trump did put a lot of populism in his campaign. He as going to get us the BEST Healthcare. Manufacturing jobs were coming back. He was going to stand up for the little guy. Remember Drain the Swamp"?
Of course, he didn't' mean any of it. But a good conman knows how to read a crowd to know what they want to hear.
There's a reason Sanders loves to bring up the stuff Trump promised back in 2016.
Sanders has decades of history fighting for actual progressive policies. He doesn't have to lie and pretend to be f0r these popular ideas.
I think people will see the difference when you put a conman next to a real populist.

(6,139 posts)its been going on enough already, wanna see IA and NH results. The important thing for us is to remain unapologetically united, no matter who the eventual nominee is. If it happens to be Bernie, ALL candidates must campaign for him like theyve never done for anyone before. Obama and Biden would have to do the same, not to mention all of us on DU. He is my top 3 choices but he is not bottom 3 either. Many of his ideas became mainstream but Biden proposes no bold changes. Sanders unapologetic anti free trade stance is a strength in MI and PA.
