Elizabeth Warren 'disappointed' by Bernie Sanders volunteers' attacks

MARSHALLTOWN, Ia. — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren said Sunday she hopes fellow Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders “reconsiders” his campaign’s talking points that attack her as a candidate.

A POLITICO report released Saturday revealed a script used by Sanders campaign volunteers when engaging with potential supporters. It instructs voters leaning toward Warren to criticize the senator from Massachusetts and say, “she’s bringing no new bases into the Democratic Party,” according to the report.

“I was disappointed to hear that Bernie is sending his volunteers out to trash me. Bernie knows me and has known me for a long time,” she told reporters after a town hall in Marshalltown on Sunday. “He knows who I am, where I come from, what I have worked on and fought for and the coalition and grassroots movement we’re trying to build.”

Warren has largely shied away from attacking other Democrats running for president, and rarely attacks them by name on the campaign trail. She told reporters Sunday that the Sanders campaign approach is not how Democrats will win in 2020.

“We all saw the impact of the factionalism in 2016 and we can’t have a repeat of that,” she said, referencing the close race between Sanders, the senator from Vermont, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “Democrats need to unite our party and that means pulling in all parts of the Democratic coalition.”

Saying Warren is bringing no new bases into the Democratic Party completely ignores how much excitement women had over Warren's candidacy. Over at DailyKos.com, there is *massive* support for Senator Warren. I bet a number of Democrats and Independents have considered voting for Warren. Senator Sanders' campaign is apparently looking to trash Warren with things that just are not true.

Hahahaha...I just thought of something. What if Joe Biden offered Senator Warren the VP slot and she accepted, just to box in Senator Sanders. I am not saying it would happen, and I am not saying it would be a good idea, I just think it would be so funny if it actually happened.

It is way over the top for her to claim that Sanders "sent out volunteers to trash me". Taken at face value, what some Sanders volunteers were instructed to say to some voters in Iowa by some campaign staff member is that Warren's prime appeal is to solidly Democratic highly educated and affluent voters, and therefore, with her as our candidate, it will be hard for Democrats to expand on their current electorate. We can argue over how true or false any part of that assertion is, but it was not "trashing Warren" to so assert. It was making a case for Sander's electability in a General Election over Warren's. And all of of the major candidates are spinning the "electability" card.

The fact that Sanders represents a lily white State and is disproportionately supported by whites has been pointed out by his rivals and supporters of his rivals repeatedly. This type of thing falls far short of "trashing", but claiming to have been unfairly "trashed" by a rival is a well known and well worn method of trying to score points against a rival. It's called politics.

in a rival for the nomination. And by any definition they are still rivals for the nomination. There were no lies told about Warren. There were no allegations made against her. There were no attempts at character assassination. There was no distortion of her positions on issues or on her record in Congress. There was no dredging up of any past "controversies" that fairly or unfairly she may have been involved in. Again, at worse, those in his campaign who developed that talking point were "guilty" of delivering "a back handed complement". Specifically that part about "She is my second choice, but..."

Sure that talking point was designed to woo caucus goers away from Warren to Sanders, not to boost her chances. Well, duh. Right now they are each fighting for their political survival in this race. But it did not "trash" Warren. And a strong case can be made that everything that talking point said has a legitimate basis in reality. For YEARS here on DU, but more significantly in the national media, I have watched Sanders hammered over the fact that his support was disproportionately white. I have seen multiple references to the fact that Vermont is one of the whitest states in the nation. I have seen "concerns" registered over whether Sanders can engender sufficient enthusiasm among African American voters to drive the turn out that Democrats need to beat Trump in 2020.

Such concerns were never expressed in order to help Sanders win the nomination, or to convince his current supporters to stick with him. It was and is a talking point used against him (though Sanders is showing some increased support among Black voters recently.) Expressing such concerns however do not qualify as "trashing" Sanders. It is part of the larger debate over how Democrats can best retake the White House, with what candidate.

Since when have arguments concerning relative "electability " been considered "attacks", or "trashing"? It is legitimate to question whether Sanders can attract sufficient minority support to win the Presidency. It is legitimate to question whether Warren can attract sufficient lower middle class and working class votes to win the Presidency. In neither case is that an accusation that either Sanders or Warren opposes the interests of those voters.

However Warren immediately framed this as an attack on her. And then she sought to cash in on it with a fund raising letter. What the Sanders staffers tried was an attempt to woo voters away from Warren with a critique regarding her relative electability. What Warren is now engaged in comes much closer to being a literal attack on her rival with a false claim that the Sanders campaign trashed her.

From employing Susan Sarandon to take shots at Warren to calling one of Bidens proposals to the 9-11 terrorist attack. The history is very clear.

Jan 2020

I was a Sanders supporter in 2016, and am a Warren supporter for 2020. But if Bernie gets the nod for 2020, I will happily and enthusiastically support him.

But his response to this has been rather tepid. One one interview, he pointed out that his campaign has over 500 employees, and that sometimes people say things they shouldn't. That's fine so far as it goes, but he needs to clearly distance himself from stuff like this. Perceptions sometimes matter more than truth in the political game, and unless he responds in a more forceful way to these allegations -- i.e., by finding out who was responsible for distributing the talking points and instructing volunteers and dismissing that person or persons -- he will be perceived as giving tacit approval for it.
