not just because I'm a Bernie supporter but that's not how he rolls. And most of Bernie supporter's second choice is Warren, why would she discourage them. Like me, his supporters are not buying this.
As far as I'm concerned I wouldn't be surprised if Trump wasn't behind it somehow. He's been firing shots after Bernie for a few days.
Besides what has Bernie to gain if it's true? Warren supporter would hate him and possibly wouldn't vote for Bernie and if this hurts Bernie his supporters would hate Warren and not vote for her. Trump wins again?

Her complete statement is at the link. I'm not knocking Berni, but he is wrong about this. Hillary Clinton won by 3,000,000 votes. Its his opinion and its honest, but he wrong.

I don't think it should stop Democrats from picking a woman if she is the best candidate, but Bernie is not alone in having those concerns and I don't see expressing his concerns (in private no less) as being anti-woman anymore than people who might have concerns about Bernie's or Biden's age as being driven by ageism.

Before it became clear that enough Americans in enough swing states would choose a racist, bat-shit crazy billionaire with no experience over a highly qualified woman who, according to one of the pundits on MSNBC, men don't like because she "reminds them of their nagging wives." Sadly, Bernie's probably not wrong, as sickening as it is. I believe Elizabeth Warren that he said it, although if it was a private conversation it was inappropriate for her to make it public.

I don't think that all politicians give a job to all their close friends and family on their campaign...

Just an FYI - she wasn't campaigning in December 2018. Neither was Bernie.

Why do you think that she would lie about what he said to friends back in 2018, then lie again about her campaign not being the one to leak this in 2020?

What reason would she have to do this?

It's amazing how much blatant sexism there is in the media when covering female candidates. I even thought Sarah Palin was a victim of sexist coverage, much as I don't like her. PS. Elizabeth Warren, my Senator confirms the conversation.

Do you doubt her word?

2018 meeting that a woman can't win, sources say

The two agreed that if they ultimately faced each other as presidential candidates, they should remain civil and avoid attacking one another, so as not to hurt the progressive movement. They also discussed how to best take on President Donald Trump, and Warren laid out two main reasons she believed she would be a strong candidate: She could make a robust argument about the economy and earn broad support from female voters.

Sanders responded that he did not believe a woman could win.
The description of that meeting is based on the accounts of four people: two people Warren spoke with directly soon after the encounter, and two people familiar with the meeting.

After publication of this story, Warren herself backed up this account of the meeting, saying in part in a statement Monday, "I thought a woman could win; he disagreed."

My point was that he might have encouraged Elizabeth Warren to run in 2015 but become doubtful about whether a woman could win after 2016, when a racist with no experience beat out a highly qualified woman who deserved to win. Of course, I think Bernie himself bears some responsibility for 2016, which is why I can't support him in the primaries again. He should have conceded earlier and done more to counteract the widespread misperception among many of his supporters that he was the rightful winner of the primary and Hillary was only nominated because of the superdelegates.

Tue Jan 14, 2020, 05:45 PM

I think she was the victim of Russian hacks, a media that was both sexist and trying too hard to appear balanced to both sides at a time when balance for balance's sake was inappropriate, and a highly inappropriate FBI press conference days before the election, but to me stolen means that votes were actually tallied for the wrong candidate, and unlike in 2000 that does not seem to have happened. I also think Hillary made some key mistakes in terms of which states to target. But when I campaigned for her in Pennsylvania the week before the election, I met several people who said they were voting for Jill Stein and who legitimately believed that Bernie had won more votes in the primary and the superdelegates overturned the will of the voters. Even my sister-in-law, who is highly educated and usually well informed, believed that nonsense. Of course, with the people I met I explained that Hillary actually got more votes in the primaries, and I told them I supported Bernie in the primaries too but Hillary won and beating Trump was the most important thing, but I couldn't believe how many people were under misconceptions about that.

America has tried the 'Old Walking-Dead Rich Guy as President' and come up horribly short.

What would send an clearer message than electing a female, young, empathetic leader to the White House?

Throw in a few other characteristics, like care for people rather than corporations, concern for Global Warming and the Environment, antithesis to overseas wars, and the World will beat a path to America's front door to shake hands and say "Well Done! Welcome back!"

and Sanders campaigns. I don't care which Democratic candidate gets the nomination. I am here to win. We need to retake the Senate and the presidency, we cannot allow Trump to seat another supreme court judge to continue to create havoc in the world for another four years. It would be great if either Sanders or Warren won the nomination and made the other their VP choice, we would kick Trump's ass for sure.

We have to be in this thing to win if we lose it will be a green light to the Republican party to continue their destruction except it will be 10x more ruthless. We need to end this era of "crisis" democracy and focus on winning elections for the next 50 years.

progressive economic policies, are the "I'm not Trump, vote for me" party.

"It's not good enough to say, 'Hey, I'm a Latina, vote for me.' That is not good enough. I have to know whether that Latina is going to stand up for the working class, and is going to take on big money interests. ... It is not good enough to have someone say, 'I'm a woman, vote for me!' ... In other words, one of the struggles you're going to be seeing in the Democratic Party is whether we go beyond identity politics. ... The working class in this country is being decimated. That's why Trump won."

Of course this is incorrect. The only one running on "Hey, I'm a woman, vote for me" was Sarah Palin. In the last election people with the least amount of money voted for the Democrat. Trump voters did not do so because of economics, he won because he made race and immigration and gender central issues. Hillary didn't do that. Elizabeth Warren isn't running on being a woman. Trump won white voters of all classes. I don't know who this "disaffected working class" is.

The idea that people voted for Trump because Democrats don't care about working and middle class people? Then why, after three years of Trump obviously not giving a shit about anybody but the 1%, is his approval rate among his voters still high? Because they only watch Fox News and listen to right-wing radio.

Bernie: "You know why Donald Trump was elected president? One of the reason he was elected president is people turn on the TV and nobody is talking about the lives of working class people ... ." If they turned off Fox and actually looked at Democratic Party policies, they would know who is talking about the lives of working class people. They never heard Hillary, mainstream media spent only 10% of their time on policy.

Tue Jan 14, 2020, 02:43 AM
Jan 2020

Something along the lines of 'it's ludicrous to believe I'd have said such a thing'.

Kinda weasel words, but hey ... so was 'I didn't have sexual relations with that woman'.

I will say, however, I'd be pretty surprised if we won 2020 against Trump ... if we choose either of the currently-running female candidates.

Another election, a different candidate ... ask me then. Someone other than Liz or Amy? Ask me when it happens.

To be clear, I'd LOVE a female POTUS, and I think Liz or Amy or Hillary or lots of other women would do a better job than the vast majority of males.

But ... these choices, in this election? I'm not seeing it happening. Sorry ... Just call it like I see it. I'd be very happy to be proven wrong.

BTW, I'm sorry but saying Hillary 'won' is like saying a baseball game was won by the team who's pitcher(s) threw more strikes instead of how many runs were scored. Just like the Saints didn't beat the Rams in the NFCC game last year, even though the refs cheated them, hardcore.

I'd say she proved a woman COULD win ... but that doesn't mean she actually won.

Lastly, literally hundreds of public figures have openly questioned whether 'a woman could win POTUS' over damn near my entire life. And MANY MANY MANY of them have, over those years, through whatever passed for their own 'objective analysis' ... have publicly said 'Uh, I don't think so'. Some of them were even ... ya know, Women.

So why is it so ZOMFG SHOCKING!!?!! that Bernie came up with that assessment in a private convo?

I think you kinda have to already hate Bernie to flip out about this ... JMHO.

She was referring to a conversation that the two of them had together in 2018.

For you to say unequivocally that she is lying, you would have had to have been present during that conversation.

As another poster has pointed out, your argument is also a fallacy. You point to speeches and behavior in the 1980s.

What Bernie FINALLY did WAY after the Dem Convention in 2016 (and it would be nice to have a link to the 41 events you allege), does not mitigate his atrocious behavior in dragging the fight to the Dem Convention in 2016 when it was clear to anyone sane that Hillary had won the largest number of delegates. All that did was to encourage the atrocious behavior of his surrogates and "Bernie Bros" who kept painting HRC as worse than Trump.

Bernie's response to that atrocious behavior then: *crickets*

146. So why do you think Warren told associates he did after she had the conversation with him?

They hadn't even announced....

Did you even read what was said and by whom?

The conversation they had was in December 2018, and she told people THEN about what he said.

What reason do you think that she would tell people, after the conversation in December 2018, the he said that if he had not?

It was leaked this week, by someone that she told then, in December 2018....

Are you clear on things now?

It doesn't make any sense, and it was leaked this week by her campaign, even Nate Silver believes that.

But, I don't derail easily, as you should know.

Again....Why would she tell people he said this right after her conversation with him in December 2018 when neither had announced?

Is answering that uncomfortable for you?

And what evidence do you have that she is lying about her campaign, and by definition, with her support, leaked it?

Other than wishful thinking, that is.

Now, your question about wny Bernie would change his mind about telling her to run has been answered many times on DU - Warren running for POTUS would not have been a real challenge to HIM in 2015. Three years passed. Even Bernie must be capable of chanding his mind, despite what many here say about him. As an example - his 2106 proposal for MFA promised it could be done in 8 years, now this year, when there were other single payer options by other candidates, he suddenly claimed that it was possible in a mere TWO years.

Interestingly, the last time I saw this kind of excoriation of Warren by Sanders supporters (many who were talking about her being his running mate) was when she endorsed HRC after the nomination, saying that she had betrayed progressives and progressive ideals by endorsing Bernie's opponent. Sadly familiar...

I'm not surprised....

I find her to be far, far more credible, especially when you look at their histories. However she committed the sin of running and not simply staying out and endorsing the favorite of many.

There might be more to it than that and it seems that Elizabeth and Bernie might have different versions of what was really said.

Myself, I think it's much ado about nothing. And as often happens in campaigns, some partisans will grasp at any straw in an attempt to discredit a political opponent.

185. Actually, so sayeth Warren...

That's not true. Warren said he said it. There were only 2 people in the room, and Bernie says he didn't say it. The media took her side automatically, completely ignoring his denial. Moreover, this was about something that supposedly happened 2 years ago and she pulled it right before the debate. I don't believe her for a second. Especially considering the Bernie encouraged her to run in 2015 and campaigned for Hillary even AFTER Hillary and the DNC rigged the primary against him.
This was just Warren using identity politics in a cheap attempt to get a bump in the polls and drag Bernie down.
My first choice is Tulsi Gabbard. Bernie is my second choice. I HAD planned to support Warren, should it fall to her, but now I no longer trust her. Warren started this, not Bernie.
