Key points:
Bolding mine.
I would be careful with the sexism angle when it comes to the Bernie/Warren exchange individually thats not what this is about and I think itll be really bad news for us if that becomes what this is about (i.e. press asking her if she thinks Bernie is sexist), the staffer told the group. Is that what this is about broadly? Absolutely. But no one here is actually claiming Bernie himself is sexist (regardless of your own personal beliefs on that topic).
At one point in a lengthy DM to the Twitter group on Tuesday morning, the Warren staffers description of the controversy hewed closer to Sanderss description than Warrens. Claiming youre worried a woman cant win/flagging that shell receive sexist attacks is something many, many people feel, the campaign official wrote.
Sanders and Warren, he said, "have great respect for one another, theyre fighting for a lot of the same goals, again, there were some wires crossed apparently about this story.
Asked to comment on the move to de-escalate, Warren's communications director, Kristen Orthman, pointed to the candidates statement on Monday night calling Sanders a friend and longtime ally. Bernie and I have far more in common than our differences on punditry, Warren said.

(3,649 posts)Nobody else was in the room. The story was first reported by CNN who got their information from 4 sources who "had knowledge of the conversation". The only people who would have knowledge of the conversation are those in Bernie's and Elizabeth's camps. There's no way Bernie's people leak this when he's rising in the polls and trying to focus his campaign on winning Iowa, which, by the way, is in 3 weeks. Warren's campaign has been lagging in the polls and in fundraising. It's likely if she doesn't do well in Iowa and New Hampshire that she'll be out of the race. Her best bet at gaining support is through the progressive wing of the party, and it's not far-fetched that some people high up in her campaign thought attacking Bernie could be a way back into the race and that the timing (1 day before the debate, 3 weeks before the caucus) would be perfect. Everything points to this being a leak by the Warren campaign.

(5,003 posts)the conversation and even Warrens staff is saying the same now. Bernie doesnt need to deescalate because he didnt fundraise over this. Didnt send his surrogates out to bad mouth Warren and simply responded to any question about this that it was not an accurate reporting of what he said. He has nothing to deescalate from.
The the anti Sanders blinders really affect reasoning.

(16,672 posts)She backs down from conflict too easily. She comes off as weak when she doesnt go for the jugular.
Shes smart but Ive seen her not quite sure how to handle situations when people go after her too many times in the political world you cant be perceived as unwilling to handle conflict either whether we like it or not.
On that note. I hope this blows up in sanders face.

If we want to trace back why Progressives liked Warren (and ha da less favorable view of Biden) that would be a good start.
This didn't' show that. This was her making a charge that didn't' make sense given the record of who it was directed at. It was mud throwing and then pretending to be above it. Which made it look like a betrayal not just of Sanders but her own principals. OF course she would back off.
It was especially silly given that she has real issues with Biden. She has shown she can fight him on the issues.
On that Note, No, given 30 years of public statements and that he wanted Warren to run in 2016, this is unlikely to blow up in his face. All it did is let CNN look like idiots.

(3,855 posts)This fight won't help her at all. It certainly hurts her with progressives.
From what I hear, a lot fo Warren's people did not all agree with doing this. So yah I can see her wanting to get past it as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, I don't' see the media letting her do that.
