I think I might like Tom Steyer. Is there something wrong with me?

Most of the time Steyer talks, he makes a lot of sense. I kind of prefer him over some of the other candidates. Am I crazy?

If I were to vote in a presidential

Joe Biden

Barack Obama had < 1 Senate term. Federal experience, to be sure - but not a lot.

Mayor Pete is an executive of a medium sized US town. Not exactly screaming "next stop: White House!" Nevertheless, if elected, I'm confident he'd figure it out.

Steyer does not strike me as Trump-like; he would seek out qualified advisors to help advise him on how to be President. His advisors won't run screaming, I suspect.

That would be about $70,350.00 in 2019.

[link:https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/|]

FDR would not be a billionaire today.

In addition, before becoming president, FDR was:

--A state senator
--Assistant secretary of the navy
--Governor of New York.

He was not a billionaire. Also, unlike Steyer or Trump, he held a high political office before becoming President of the United States.

FDRs wealth in 2010 dollars would have been about $60 million dollars. Plus, FDR had high-level political experience as Governor of New York before becoming President of the United States. Trump had held no high political office before becoming President, and Steyer would be in the same position if he had become President.

OF COURSE. They all have the ability to impress anyone who listens to them, or anyone in the mood to be caught by a stray fancy. It's a basic qualification for the job.

And citizens shouldn't fool themselves that they are even half-assed responsible and informed unless they've read everything they can about those candidates they're considering voting for. Skip the speeches and debates, open the searches, reach the articles, order the used books.

Then come maybe back and answer your own question and report. May just turn out that simple and emphatically delivered answers sounded more impressive than the people do.

41. I just listened to him three times, because of this thread,
Wed Jan 15, 2020, 12:05 AM
Jan 2020

and identified his appeal. Every time he starts out by blaming the corporate stranglehold on our nation, including both political parties, for everything. Simple, folks. Resentment toward the elites!

Not a word about how on earth the Democratic Party COULD exist if this were true. Not a word about why the "corporate stranglers" and their servant Republican leaders are desperate to keep Democrats out of power. Not a word about how the Democrats smashed them the last time we had the power to do so.

You asked a question: that appeal to simple-minded resentment is absolutely to be denied. You're being lied to and your worst characteristics are being appealed to.

I'll tell you something else. Everyone here voted Democrat, of course, but by FAR most people who like Steyer and other populist types usually don't or never vote. I know that because their message depends on people being eager to believe and blame elite "they" and "thems" for all their problems.

Whereas everyone who votes has seen and knows the power of the vote, especially when they see it go to the Republicans who start destroying everything they believe in because not enough people voted to stop them. Democrats who vote know all about the many millions who don't bother to vote and about all those deluded, ignorant fools who vote spitefully for someone else because they bought the lies that Democrats are betraying them to the corporate stranglers. Just as Republicans do, Tweedledum and Tweedledee as Sanders once put it.

They never seem to notice that the corporate stranglers, Republicans, socialists, Russians and other foreign enemies are all desperate to defeat the Democrats who keep them from their goals. They're told not to by the Steyers, so of course they also never ask WHY.

And that's incredibly stupid and incredibly ignorant, and that makes them the #1 huge danger to themselves and everyone they care about and are responsible for.

So, go read about Steyer, learn about what an empty sack he is and keep looking. But look for people who talk first and last about what they want to achieve, never those who talk about, excitingly, about who you should resent and the need to destroy the target before anything can be built. And if they don't see Democrats leading all efforts, drop them like the rotten potatoes they are.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

someone with experience that is a must for me. Yeah he seems like a nice guy, but I don't want to have a beer with him!! I want someone with knowledge of politics and foreign policy. And to hit the ground running.

Some candidates don’t seem very committed to our party. They just like it better than the Republican Party, but maybe they are really independents at heart.

I initially supported Delaney because he was the first Dem to announce, and it was at a time when I needed to know someone would run.

Now I support Steyer, in no small part because he ran impeachment ads.

I saw Elizabeth Warren speak at the Iowa State Fair, and I was impressed. I've also been impressed with Yang and his understanding of what is going to happen to our economy because of AI and automation/robotics.

I agree, he makes a lot of sense.

JFK was wealthy, as was FDR, and TR (yes, I know - not a Dem - but he brought us the National Parks, so....). All three were dedicated to the proposition of the Government serving the people. I see that in Steyer - and to be honest, I see it in Bloomberg and (even though he is not a Billionaire) Yang. I don't see wealth as an automatic disqualifier.

I will be realistic, though: My choice of Steyer is predicated on the DU premise "If the election were held today...." By the time my state comes up, a lot of people will have dropped out. If you want to support Steyer - Great! But be real about having a second and possibly third choice in mind.

Right now, I'd go Steyer; if he drops out Yang; if he drops out Warren; and if she drops out Biden. I will vote for whomever the Democratic Party nominates without reservation or hesitation.

But I refuse to reinforce the role that money has in politics by rewarding someone who with one stroke of his own pen can raise more money for his campaign than Harris and Booker could in a whole year of campaigning appealing for donations. That is the main reason why I never seriously consider Steyer.
