Video emerges of Sanders saying in 1988 a woman could be elected president

A clip emerged Tuesday of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) saying in 1988 that he believed a woman could be elected president, just a day after Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said Sanders told her in 2018 that a woman couldn't win the presidency.

"The real issue is not whether you're black or white, whether you're a woman or a man. In my view, a woman could be elected president of the United States," Sanders, at the time a high-profile supporter of Jesse Jackson’s 1988 presidential bid, said in the clip. "The real issue is whose side are you on? Are you on the side of workers and poor people, or are you on the side of big money and the corporations?"

The clip was highlighted by Meagan Day, a staff writer for the leftist magazine Jacobin and a vocal supporter of Sanders. The video's circulation comes shortly after a CNN report citing anonymous sources said Sanders told Warren in December 2018 that a woman could not be elected president.

Sanders vehemently denied the claim, saying Monday, "It is ludicrous to believe that at the same meeting where Elizabeth Warren told me she was going to run for president, I would tell her that a woman couldn't win."

8. The Bernie Sanders 'Rape Fantasy' Essay, Explained
Tue Jan 14, 2020, 11:53 PM
Jan 2020

I guess if we are going back to statements made over three decades ago, I guess we should also consider Bernie's essay on women fantisizing about rape.

https://www.npr.org/sections/itsallpolitics/2015/05/29/410606045/the-bernie-sanders-rape-fantasy-essay-explained

"A man goes home and masturbates his typical fantasy. A woman on her knees, a woman tied up, a woman abused.

"A woman enjoys intercourse with her man — as she fantasizes being raped by 3 men simultaneously.

"The man and woman get dressed up on Sunday — and go to Church, or maybe to their 'revolutionary' political meeting.

"Have you ever looked at the Stag, Man, Hero, Tough magazines on the shelf of your local bookstore? Do you know why the newspaper with the articles like 'Girl 12 raped by 14 men' sell so well? To what in us are they appealing?"

No Cleary you didn't and that's fine. You want to distort the truth to fit your narrative it's dishonest but its who you are. You may be thinking to yourself, "how dare I say such a thing"? Again, you didn't read the article before presenting it as evidence cause had you done so you should have noticed that Sanders was choosing to illustrate sexual extremism in otherwise normal people. While the language was graphic it makes the point in context. You chose to ignore the context of the text that it is presented AND THE EXPLANATION GIVEN IN THE ARTICLE YOU SITED! This makes you one of two things. Ignorant or dishonest. I dont care whichever but I know the goal is to make sanders look bad at all cost and it's intellectually dishonest. Debate the issues stop the mud slinging, we are better than that here.

It doesn't matter what he said 30 years ago or what he even believes. He may have asked Warren to run 4 years ago, but that didn't happen and when he did run and did better than he thought, he decided that he really did want to be President. He knew she would be a big problem for him in the 2020 primary if she ran, so this time around he tried to talk her out of it.

This story is sourced and reported out well.

I mean, you could be mad at him for saying it. You could be mad at her for holding onto it until the day before the last debate before Iowa and then dropping the contents of a private conversation with her "friend."

It's 2020 now, not 1988. There are tons of voters who weren't even born when he said that. How is it relevant, compared to what he said very much closer to now?

Given a little time, I can find anyone saying almost anything in the past.

The election is now, not in 1988.

In 1988 George H. W. Bush defeated Michael Dukakis. Here's what the electoral map looked like that year. It's irrelevant.

He certainly wasn't saying anything complimentary about the Democratic party in 1988, either.

"I am not a member of the Rainbow Coalition. I am a member of the Progressive Coalition. I do not agree with Jesse Jackson on all of his issues by any means and I disagree with working within the Democratic Party, okay?"

https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/11/politics/democratic-primary-bernie-sanders-kfile/index.html

And he has been known to change his mind about things:

April 15, 2015

“I am one of the exceptions," he said. "I am not going to start a super PAC. I’m not going to go around the country talking to millionaires. Now I'm saving my time because they wouldn't give me any money anyhow and that's fine."

Mr. Sanders was cheered at a fancy campaign fund-raiser at the Hollywood home of Syd Leibovitch, a high-end real estate agent, and his wife, Linda, on Wednesday night.

Tickets for the event sold for a minimum of $250. Those who spent the maximum, $2,700, or who raised $10,000, were invited to a “pre-event reception,” according to the invitation.

The 14 co-hosts included Cindy Asner, the former wife of the actor Ed Asner, the actress Mimi Kennedy, and Benjamin W. Decker, whose website notes that he was once called the “legendary Hollywood P.R. maven” by Forbes magazine, and used to produce “celebrity-driven red-carpet movie premieres.”
...........................................
It was the ninth such event of his campaign, his aides said, according to the pool report.
................................

As Mr. Sanders began speaking to the guests, he joked that the Leibovitch house was a “proletariat” home, and told them, “The truth is there are many people in this country who have money but also believe in social justice.”

https://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2015/10/15/bernie-sanders-has-fund-raiser-at-fancy-hollywood-home/

And he has been known to misremember what he has said or done, even when told that he was mistaken:
