Biden In 1974: Women Don't Have Sole Right To Say What Should Happen To Their Bodies

Biden In 1974: Women Don’t Have Sole Right To Say What Should Happen To Their Bodies

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/biden-in-74-women-dont-have-sole-right-to-say-what-should-happen-to-their-bodies_n_5c78409ae4b0de0c3fbf2b70

When former Vice President Joe Biden was a freshman senator he said in a 1974 interview with Washingtonian that he believed the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling clearing the way for legal first-trimester abortions “went too far,” and that he didn’t “think that a woman has the sole right to say what should happen to her body.”

In the interview, which took place just two years after Biden’s wife and two-year-old were killed in a car accident, Biden — then the youngest senator in U.S. history — said his anti-abortion views were part of his “socially conservative” outlook.

“My wife said I was the most socially conservative man she had ever known,” he said. “When it comes to issues like abortion, amnesty, and acid, I’m about as liberal as your grandmother.”

Here’s Bernie being on the right side of history. Once again.

God he was so young then. Like a baby.

In 1952, the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), more commonly known as MI6, constructed a plan for a coup and pressed the U.S. to mount a joint operation to remove the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq and install the Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi to rule Iran autocratically.

We have direct responsibility for the outcome of that coup, and the rise of Iran's religious-extremist government.
What Sanders was doing wasn't maybe exactly right, but it was less wrong than what our own government did.

The party he belonged to and was an elector for justified the hostage-taking by mistakenly insisting that all of the targets were CIA agents. Clearly, they were not.

From the link:

"One prominent political figure on the 2020 stage, then almost completely unknown, stood apart by joining a Marxist-Leninist party that not only pledged support for the Iranian theocracy, but also justified the hostage taking by insisting the hostages were all likely CIA agents. Compare the impact of the claim the organization Sanders was part of, about the hostages, versus the opposition of bodily autonomy for half our nation's population.

People still fighting the cold war are less of a concern to me than people still trying to micro-manage women with the power of our own government today. (Thankfully, Biden abandoned that position.)

Our feelings as progressives aren’t the point. Biden’s 1974 statement in the OP would prove to be meaningless if he’s the nominee running against an anti-choice party. He’s well known and defining him with old statements that he moved on from a long time ago won’t work as a political tactic.

Bernie’s long ago positions otoh are compatible enough with his current stances to be mined by Republicans for political profit. They would skewer him on national security and patriotism for being aligned with a political party that sided with the Ayatollah during the hostage crisis. It would be part of a larger narrative against him as being an extremist and I don’t doubt that it would have an effect. If a war hero like John Kerry can be swiftboated it doesn’t take much imagination to think what they would do with Bernie’s personal history.

18. Since your candidate was a solid Republican in 1974

and thus presumably voted for Republicans who almost universally opposed abortions and all forms of women's rights, I'd be careful about making judgments on this one. Pot, kettle, black, you know.

Over 35 years and she has never waivered. She keeps a D after name and does not switch back and forth. By his own words "money and media". That is why he switches to the D label.

He talks about taking on the big banks. Never did a thing. Warren fought big banks and won long before becoming Senator. You have heard of the CFPB, correct. Good read!

75. 1996 was not 35 years ago
Sat Jan 18, 2020, 12:41 AM
Jan 2020

It was not even 24 years ago. She was 47 at the time when she first registered as a Democrat, and before that, according to some who knew her, “a diehard conservative.”

The point was ... if you are going to go back to 1974, twenty-two years before Warren became a Democrat, and critique another candidate’s statement from that time, then it would be hypocritical not to go back to that same year and examine Warren’s beliefs and writings at that time. Fair’s fair, right?

This OP did not discuss what Biden’s positions are today, or even in 1996, 22 years after the cited statement. The post set the parameters of the discussion here. Nothing about the candidates’ current positions is therefore relevant. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, as they say.

Biden, Sanders, Warren (and Bloomberg). They’re all in their 70s, and all said things they regret (I hope) 45-50 years ago. We’ve got the writings and statements and photos. Are we ready to dig into all of it? Or is it selective? Because I think in a contest, Biden might come out looking like the choir boy of the lot, in comparison.

40. Pulley went one bridge too far.
Fri Jan 17, 2020, 05:57 PM
Jan 2020
In his standard stump speech, Pulley condemned “Carter’s war drive against the Iranian people,” and said that the U.S. “was on the brink of war with Iran,” which would be fought “to protect the oil and banking interests of the Rockefellers and other billionaires.” Americans, he predicted, would soon “pay on the battlefields with our very own lives.” Their criticism of the Ayatollah was intended “to get us ready for war.” And, Pulley charged, the media who criticized those of us who were against “American imperialism” were “declared insane.” As for the hostages, Pulley said “we can be sure that many of them are simply spies… or people assigned to protect the spies.”

That VERY last sentence was a bit much. But as we have seen again and again in Iraq and Iran, the rest of his claims are true.

Fri Jan 17, 2020, 06:47 PM
Jan 2020

sponsored bills that took away abortion women's rights in this century...made it so no insurance could cover abortion...and he campaigned for and endorsed Tom Perriello in Virginia. Now that was in 17...Now I am not concerned about what a candidate thought over 40 years ago, But Sanders endorsed both Perriello and Mello in 17.

"There is a spectrum of opinion about what constitutes “pro-choice” or “anti-choice” positions (or “pro-life” or “pro-abortion”). During Mello’s time in the Nebraska Senate (2009 through 2016), he voted on six abortion-related bills. He voted in favor of three bills that limited the conditions under which abortions are legally available, and he also voted in favor of three other bills that attached conditions on receiving abortion services. In both his 2008 and 2012 state senate campaigns, Mello was endorsed by the political action committee of Nebraska Right to Life"

https://ballotpedia.org/Fact_check/Heath_Mello%27s_voting_record_on_abortion

"...It is for that reason that I’m particularly concerned about a recent comment from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who has endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Perriello, a one-term former Virginia congressperson, for governor. On MSNBC’s Morning Joe last week, the former presidential candidate agreed with host Joe Scarborough that Democrats should “be open to candidates that may not be rigidly pro-choice, may not be rigidly pro-gun control....”
"What’s uniquely concerning about Sanders’ quest to send a national signal in Virginia with Perriello is Sanders’ ongoing drive to own what the progressive brand within the Democratic Party should look like, coupled with his willingness to make abortion rights an optional part of that brand. That’s dangerous at a critical moment for abortion rights. As I’ve covered for Rewire, there is nothing progressive or winning about a so-called big tent on abortion. Perriello, whom FiveThirtyEight recently declared “a political opportunist in the age of Trump,” seems to keep moving his sleeping bag from tent to tent on the abortion issue. It’s not clear where he stands on Sanders’ willingness to accommodate anti-abortion actions and actors in the Democratic Party, all while carrying a mantle of economic justice that can’t be complete without access to ready, funded access to reproductive health care".

that voted to take away abortion right. Heath voted for 6 anti-choice bill and sponsored a couple...they all became law. Perriello is one of the Democrats who's votes complicated abortion in the ACA when he was in the house...and we got less than what we wanted...Sanders campaigned for them in 2017 ... not 1974. But you want to me to care about something that happens well over 40 years ago but ignore Sanders more recent actions...well no. That is a funny thing about those who attack him as too far left.

His positions have become the mainstream over time.

Maybe begin trying something that works rather than blindly throwing material at the wall hoping it sticks, because nothing you throw is sticking... at all.

You simply cannot see it, can you? The more crap of this you throw at the walls, the worse Bernie's numbers get. It reflects poorly on Sanders and even worse on you.
