Paul Krugman on Sanders' apology to Biden

Two-tweet thread starting here, full text below:

Sanders apologizes, sort of, for misrepresenting Biden on Social Security, saying that his campaign didn't give the "full context." The full context was that Biden was saying the opposite of what the Sanders people claimed 1/

Also, I really don't understand that apparent media consensus that Biden was wrong to call the video "doctored." If you snip out part of a speech to make it seem that someone was saying something he wasn't, how is that different, morally or substantively, from "doctoring"? 2/

Kudos to Krugman for this followup to his blistering column about Sanders yesterday:

And good for him for pointing out the stupidity of anyone criticizing what Biden said about the video having been doctored by the Sanders campaign.

Deceptive editing IS doctoring. Period.

primary today, I would vote for:

If one has to resort to semantics to make an argument, it's not much of an argument. They should address the accuracy or lack thereof of the claim, not make pedantic assertions based on Biden's choice of words.

Besides, even if we take the pedantic route, the Oxford dictionary definition of doctoring is: "change the content or appearance of (a document or picture) in order to deceive;falsify"

That would be an accurate description of what occurred.

since the videotape was invented, and since celluloid movies were invented, the most common form of "doctoring" has been to cut out the parts that you do not like. To say that deliberately leaving out the parts that you do not like from a video is not "doctoring" is to not even understand the definition of the word "doctoring".

Not only is the Sanders campaign guilty of deceit. They are also guilty of having an extermely poor vocabulary as well as having an extremely poor understanding of technology.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
