Expanding the party, and Joe Rogan.

Expanding the party means getting votes from people who don't agree with us on everything. The usual knock on people like Bernie and Warren is that they will scare away moderates with their big spending leftist ways like single payer and free college.

So wouldn't reaching Joe Rogan be exactly an example of expanding the party? Why is it cool to post articles from Never Trump right-wingers like (say) Jennifer Rubin, or for candidates to talk about how friendly they are with Republicans, but the same doesn't apply to Joe Rogan?

Personally, I have low opinions of both Joe Rogan and Jennifer Rubin. Rogan is OK with anti-trans bigotry. Rubin is OK with torture. Rogan likes conspiracy theories. Rubin likes supply-side economics. I'm not OK with any of that. And I'm not going to go listening to their ideas for wisdom. But in the end, if the goal is to beat Trump, they're both in the same category.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

It might be necessary, but it understandably could be controversial. For example, if Bernie had decided to come out against trans rights, for example, to court Joe Rogan, that would be a different thing, and I would be opposed to that. But that's not what happened at all. Bernie is strongly in favor of trans rights, regardless of what Joe Rogan says about it.

Is a "Trumper" anyone who voted for Trump, then a lot of "moderate Republicans" are also Trumpers.

I don't know much about Rogan's political views, so I don't know what category he's in. He hosts a show which I've never seen except for a few clips, but apparently he's got a big audience. And as far as "pandering", Bernie didn't change any of his positions to seek Rogan's approval. In fact, I don't even know if he reached out to Rogan or if Rogan just spontaneously decided to say that.

My point of view is that generally, if something will help us beat Trump, it's good. Within reason, of course. But, like, when Hillary went after Kissinger's endorsement last time around, obviously that's not ideal (and I guess it didn't work), but I'd still rather have a Democratic president with a Kissinger or Joe Rogan endorsement than a Republican president.

That's a rather illogical purity test you have come up with, and again Biden fails, kind of like last time where people were piling on Bernie for voting the exact same way as Biden on that bill in the 90s. That was interesting.

So... let's try some googling.

Oh, hey, look what I found! Biden saying nice things about Henry Kissinger. A "great friend". OMG. Does this mean that Biden is cool with death squads and war crimes?

It gets even worse when the purity test is extended to two-degrees-of-separation like you did when you said "Rogan counts Alex Jones as a buddy." Cause now Biden's in deep. You know what kind of people Biden is linked by two degrees to, just through Kissinger alone? We're talking freaking Pinochet. I mean, Alex Jones is a horrible human being, but some of Biden's two-degrees-of-separations have actually been convicted of crimes against humanity.

And, no, this isn't a hit piece on Biden. It's a hit piece on hypocrisy.

Fri Jan 24, 2020, 05:02 PM
Jan 2020

I'm just pointing out how dumb the smears are by bringing to light the hypocrisy. By the "logic" of these smears, no candidate would survive. If Bernie is held to account for everything Rogan says or does, then Biden, by the exact same logic, is responsible for everything that Kissinger says or does. If you want to smear Sanders by a two-link from Rogan to Alex Jones, then by precisely the same logic, Biden gets linked to Pinochet and the rest of the Latin American war criminals.

I don't actually think Biden is responsible for all that, what I think is that this whole smear game is absurd. It's the same with the private jet, or the waste bill that both Bernie and Biden voted for, and everything else.

What else do you want? You want bigger dicks than us?” “Ladies,” he went on some more, “I love you … but let’s be honest, you don’t invent a lot of shit...”

or how about his latest Netflix garbage...

"Rogan’s most recent Netflix special is often funny because Joe Rogan is a professional stand-up comedian, but if you look past the jokes themselves and focus on the targets he’s choosing, the same patterns emerge. Hillary, the #MeToo movement, why it sucks that he can’t call things “gay,” vegan bullies, sexism. Of all the things in the world for a comedian to joke about right now, why these? “I say shit I don’t mean because it’s funny,” he says during the special, which is something all comedians say, and is sort of true but also sort of not. People reveal their deepest selves in the subjects they keep revisiting, and the hills they choose to die on. With Rogan, you can often see and hear the tension between what he knows he’s supposed to believe and what he really thinks. Joe Rogan may be all about love, but beneath the surface he’s seething."

I am glad, though, that malina has taken it upon herself to fully speak out for both the black and the trans community. Since, you know, if she says it, it must be the voice of an entire demographic.

But I'm guessing there are trans people who are hurt by some of Rogan's awful rhetoric toward their group.

Weird. I think we must be reading different tweets. Because clearly that person is suggesting the ends justify the means here. Which is telling me they're okay with the endorsement. She certainly didn't vocalize any issue with it. What else am I to think?

Do you think it's acceptable to tout the endorsement (as Bernie's campaign has done) of a guy who has actively mocked trans women, called other women cunts, attacked gays, called blacks apes and other divisive, hateful rhetoric?

The issue isn't Rogan endorsing Bernie. It's Bernie actively trumpeting the endorsement as if it's a good thing, which tells me, he's okay with the shit Rogan has said in the past.

Scum or not, there are a lot of people who listen to Joe Rogan and think like him. People here on DU are outraged by his comments about the trans MMA fighter, but not only do polls show that most Americans agree with him, but I personally know a lot of liberals here in ultra-liberal Manhattan that also agree with what he's saying, although they obviously wouldn't use the same language. I've had the trans-women-in-sports discussion with a nonbinary person, and they disagreed with Rogan, but it's not like they were totally offended by the very idea of it.

On the other hand, I can't think of anyone who would actually be turned off to the point of voting for Trump or not voting because of something like a Rogan endorsement. First of all, because most people who would be offended don't even know who he is. But even those that do, and would be totally disgusted, would understand that Trump is so much worse for LGBT rights that it would be stupid to sit out the election.

I can see women not voting for Sanders...having listened to him...he is vile. And not everyone will turn out . I would still vote for Sanders, but he has issues with women voters now...and he will lose suburban women who go on twitter too. POC are already saying they will sit out the election as they are deeply offended...not here on social media and it wouldn't take much for us to lose it they do it. You seem to think that it is OK to take reliable voters for granted...they turn out no matter what, until they don't. It is a bad thing to do...we will vote no matter what...I remember your post on Greens which talked about voters who didn't turn out and how Green only hurt our efforts which was excellent by the way... We lost some POC last time and we lost. We can do better than this guy.

Anyone who could even consider voting for Trump is not going to be offended by Joe Rogan, period. On the contrary, there are a lot of people who have relatively progressive economic views, but aren't up on the latest things they are supposed to be offended by. Actually, polling data shows that the economically liberal/socially conservative combination is much more common than socially liberal/economically conservative. This might seem strange, because the media is full of social liberal/economically conservative people (also there's a good bit of it on DU) but in the electorate not so much.

I agree with you about not taking reliable voters for granted. But for someone to not vote for, in this hypothetical case, Bernie over Trump because of the Rogan thing, it would have to be someone so "woke" that they are offended to the bone by even the association of Bernie with Rogan, and yet are willing to let someone far more offensive in Trump become president, as opposed to Bernie who has strong a platform on social justice issues as there is.

Trump is far more offensive than Joe Rogan, and they didn't just vote for a guy that was endorsed by Trump, they voted for the actual Trump.

Yes, my point is exactly that they just want better jobs (and healthcare, and education, and everything else), but they don't want to be told what they are supposed to be offended by, even if it might offend you or me. That's exactly why an endorsement like Joe Rogan would be helpful.

19. My concern is-- Trump has been pumping Sanders for a week or so
Fri Jan 24, 2020, 03:43 PM
Jan 2020

Tweeting that the primary will be rigged, pretending faux sympathy for Sanders, and so on.

I live in an open-primary state (completely open-- you can be registered in one party and vote in the other's primary), and voters (including me <G&gt have long practiced the cross-voting that Trump is signalling. GOPers can vote in the Dem primary and push one candidate to defeat a candidate Trump fears more.

When Trump started tweeting out how he symps with Sanders, I immediately thought of my state's primary and what he was commanding to his minions in my state. Now I don't think Sanders wants Trump's support...

But then when Joe Rogan "endorses" Sanders, I have to wonder... what's his real aim? Electing Sanders? Or keeping Biden from running against Trump?

I don't know. There are some definitely temperamental similarities between some "Bernie Bros" and Trump's young male fans, so it's actually possible for some of them who don't care about policy to make that switch. Rogan, who seems to like being contrary, probably speaks to those guys.

>But in the end, if the goal is to beat Trump, they're both in the same category.>

Rubin I think is clearly anti-Trump, always has been. Rogan, however, I'm not sure his goal is to beat Trump at all.

If I were to vote in a presidential

Most (maybe all) of the right-wingers that have actually stated a preference in the Dem primary have gone for people like Biden or Pete or Klobuchar. This is people like Rubin or Frum or David Brooks and so on. Certainly, all the articles I've seen posted here on DU by right-wingers have been supportive of the centrist candidates. This makes sense, since those candidates are to the right of Bernie and Warren.

Trump hasn't endorsed or supported Bernie by any stretch. He's called Bernie a communist and has a derogatory nickname for him and everything. What Trump is trying to do is push the story that the primaries are rigged against Bernie, hoping to divide the Dems and get another "Bernie or Bust" thing going. And from what I've seen, his biggest allies in his quest to divide the Dems have been the people repeating empty smears against Bernie Sanders, like that he flew on a private jet or fell asleep or whatever.
