Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders' Embrace of Joe Rogan's Endorsement Sparks Backlash--and a Backlash to the Backlash
Rogans use of gay slurs and position on trans issues incensed some, while others were just happy Sanders might benefit from his fan base.Like many Twitter-centric controversies, the debate quickly blew up and then became circular, with Bernie foes jumping on the bandwagonand other Democrats fuming that the uproar was another example of left-wing self-sabotage.
It began when the Vermont senator's campaign tweeted out a video clip Thursday of Rogan saying he will probably vote for Bernie. The endorsement of a wildly popular public figureRogans podcast is the second-most downloaded on iTunes, and his YouTube channel has more than 7 million subscriberswould usually be cause for celebration.
But the tweet triggered backlash, even among some of Sanders supporters.
I really like Bernie and am disappointed to see the campaign boost Rogan, who has made some very anti-trans comments, tweeted trans writer Alexis Goldstein. I really hope the campaign reconsiders.
Rogans style is brash, unfiltered, and often provocative. A former UFC commentator, he has been slammed for calling athletes faggots and using the word gay as an insult. While he has previously claimed to be 100% in favor of transgender people, he has come out against the use of puberty blockers in transgender youth and railed against transwomen competing in womens sports.

Rogan is another showman. I wish that would be more obvious because it seems that people are taking many controversial performers to be something serious and relevant, when these show people are building and maintaining a character that is a career and often provides for a lavish income, plus attention and notoriety. Some that come to mind, as I have mentioned are, Coulter, Maher, Limbaugh, Trump, etc. The Spectacle feeds on them and the Simulation spews them out.
The danger is that public opinion and serious matters are being relegated to modern thespians who talk a good talk, have plenty of opinions, but are more expert at crafting pop-thought that attracts and hold attention as its primary purpose with the actual validity and meaning of the content as coming last. When what I can only call adept entertainment is considered a valid, credible source for anything, (as opposed to expertise or an extensive, academic background) we may end up living in the real-time, live sequel to the movie, Idiocracy.
Now, as we see in the OP, here comes the mob, as per "cancel culture". I am not going to criticize it much, lest I be fallen upon and cancelled, (as they tend to do even to their own) by the cyber mob, the rather tight and restrictive, (as well as divisive) influence of identity politics for its own sake seems to be a cohort in turning public discourse into a blaring circus of reactionary, impulsive rhetoric that not only gets out of control and even diffuses its own voice and impact. Often, the celebrities that become focal points on many fronts end up influencing the body politic in a disturbingly disproportionate way.
I don't want to sound like some old, mature fuddy-duddy, (but you are sounding like one, they said!) here, but this seems to be a digression in our culture that smacks of adolescence and with a diaper or two full of childishness thrown in. While media and entertainment do rule the roost for the Simulation, devolving into a sideshow might indicate a problem and a form of social decay rather than progress and freedom. After all, the celebrities provide an icon of fame for followers to amass around.

(25,505 posts)They may not. About 35% of voting-age people don't even register to vote, much less vote. A significant chunk of them never vote.
Choosing not to reach out to voters through a racist homophobe doesn't mean not reaching out to them at all.

(581 posts)And portraying themselves as holier than thou while democrats are corrupt. I've lost count of the labels used to portray Hillary supporters: neoliberal shills, corporate whores, bootlickers etc. This extended past 2016. In fact they spend more time attacking the democratic party than the republican party.
The democrats are the party that brought forward all the civil rights and civil liberty progress in the last half century. Yet so-called progressives want us to feel ashamed and turn against leading figures of the party essentially who brought forward that change.
They tell us the party is "too big a tent" and want to primary anyone who isn't entirely subscribed to their worldview, but the tent is big enough to include a guy with deplorable past comments. People can change but when the standard is set so high for democrats who have done the work and continue to fight for liberal values, but the bar is set so low for the sake of appealing to a certain demographic of white men (Rogan's core demographic), this is acceptable to the "progressive" movement.
I don't want to hear about how Sanders is so pure anymore. He's betrayed his own supporters rules ... and truth be told they were hypocrites in the first place long before Rogan being embraced.
