Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhich Candidate is Actually Surging?
It's not Bernie. It's not Joe. It's not Elizabeth or Mayor Pete, either.
The candidate who is rising the most quickly in the polls is Mike Bloomberg. Surprise, Surprise!
In some polls, he has passed Mayor Pete and is creeping up on Warren. In the most recent New York Poll, he is now #3. By Super Tuesday, the states he has been advertising heavily in will record their primary votes.
If you're not watching Bloomberg, you probably should start doing that. He's about to shake up the race in ways most people didn't expect. And, where are his numbers coming from? Well, that will be the most interesting thing of all to see.

(115,922 posts)I don't want Bloomberg to be the nominee but I certainly appreciate that he's biting large chunks out of His Lardship's yuge orange kiester. And I also like it very much that fellow New Yorker Bloomberg is exponentially richer than Trump, which will be another big thorn in his porky side. If Bloomberg is willing to use his piles of money to take Trump down, good for him. I don't think he'll get the nomination but if he does I'll vote for him absolutely gleefully while he drives Fat Nixon nuts.

(146,339 posts)he appears to be picking up support from lower-polling candidates, and may be stealing some support from others like Warren. His rising support is certainly coming from somewhere, and it doesn't seem to be from Biden or Sanders, although that will be hard to tell until we see what happens on Super Tuesday.
I think it's very interesting that a latecomer is rising in the polls as we get closer to actual primary events.

(5,559 posts)I think he is about to fade anyway, skipping the early states will push him out of the news for about a month, and as Steyer has proven, buying every TV commercial slot won't create momentum on its own.
The problem is the race is split so broadly that the normal ebb and flow of polling variances turns into swings and lead changes.

(14,907 posts)They are cherry picking individual polls and trying to claim a trend, when they are all just wandering around more or less unchanged.
It's all just statistical noise. At this point, a high percentage of people have been polled in iowa out of those that will actually vote. Either the same people are being polled multiple times, or they are missing the mark on who they call.
Only 170k +/- people voted in iowa in 2016 dem caucuses. They have to sick of all the calls, and polls, and surveys, and reporters.
Polling has to mean squat with this many candidates.

(115,922 posts)moving up more than might have been expected. He probably will plateau in 4th place and then start directing some big bucks at the Dems to defeat Trump, and more power to him. Iowa is a dog's breakfast as far as polling goes; because of its arcane caucus rules the outcome is hard to predict.

(146,339 posts)are really all that important in 2020, frankly. Not with Super Tuesday just a month away.
It looks like the top three will split most of the delegates from those two states. Nevada, too, looks like a tossup. South Carolina will give Biden a delegate count edge going into Super Tuesday.
Starting next week, polling will get more active for the March 3 primaries. Frankly, I don't think IA and NH are going to influence those much at all.
More importantly, though, I think we'll see a few more candidates drop out over the next month, and that will have an impact.

(14,907 posts)It seems those that like bernie even a little are either supporting him as their first choice or not at all. Fewer than 6% of polled voters picked bernie as their number 2 choice, meaning if their preferred candidate drops out, bernie won't be the primary beneficiary.
At this point, he is better off if they stay in the race.... But his campaign is still attacking them.

(146,339 posts)to switch to Sanders, I'm pretty sure. Bernie is a sui generis sort of guy.
A lot of people who favor a candidate who is not polling well and who drops out are going to go with a candidate they perceive as a winner. Bernie is a polarizing candidate. You either love him or don't want anything to do with him, really.

(1,812 posts)How can that translate to being called the most divisive candidate ? . The talking heads get paid a handsome sum to say that he is divisive and unelectable .The people don't agree ..

(94,808 posts)And people's voting patterns don't always mesh with who they "like". Bottom line is that Sanders has only half the support he had in 2016.
