https://www.mediaite.com/news/bernie-sanders-fans-leave-iowa-colleges-mock-caucus-in-protest-as-he-gets-trounced-by-elizabeth-warren/With voting in Iowas statewide caucuses just a week away, colleges held simulations of the events across the state Monday night. NBC News campaign embed Ben Pu covered the Drake University mock caucus, and reported that after the first round, only Warren and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg exceeded the 15 percent viability threshold.

NBC News Maura Barrett, one of apparently a zillion or so reporters at this event, reported that Sanders got 21 votes in the first round, and was dwarfed by Warren at 73 and Mayor Pete at 47.

Pu reported that the Sanders group failed at gaining additional supporters on the second round, and rather than realign with another candidate, they went home.

(24,679 posts)His campaign seems particularly ripe for an inflection point into our Party politics. They could be registered as I/D, but their real goal is to help get Trump rewarded....and then reap the expected financial rewards.

(24,679 posts)But there is a certain deja vu vibes as to how this campaign is playing out - much like 2016.
And why wouldn't Republicans replay this scenario in 2020?
And the YRCPAC's will be leading the chorus that the DNC killed off Bernie's chances and that's why he lost. UNFAIR!!!
Thus disillusioning another generation of people who should be supporting candidates with strong ties to our Party and Country.

(1,086 posts)There will be 100's where that will be true. Every candidate will not be viable in 100's of places.
This is not a measure of even strength at that site on the real night. The Sanders people know the process.

(1,086 posts)It is statewide numbers that are reported. If they realigned then that would give their vote to a Rival. By holding firm Sanders numbers would not drop between the first and second round. As delegates were already determined no reason to stay.

(1,086 posts)What the Sanders people did is exactly what would be best for their candidate in his race for the nomination. This is exactly what happens in caucuses. If the rules were different and numbers were not reported they probably would have moved to Buttigieg.

(16,527 posts)I thought Bernie was a shoe in for the nomination because he was going to blow the doors off everyone else with a people powered campaign led by young people?
And he cant even win a mock caucus at a college?

(42,862 posts)Yes indeed it is! Is this a preview of the bullying and intimidation behavior we'll see at the real caucus events?

(1,086 posts)This says nothing about what will happen after Sanders is not running.
This is exactly the correct thing for them to do in the process of the caucus. If there was more business to be done and they thought they could have an effect on that they would have stayed.
But leaving is part of the rules and what was best for their candidate in THAT context.

(68,730 posts)as they won. I would expect those with non-competitive primary candidates supporters to realign as they know their candidate isn't going to win.

(1,086 posts)If they realign they hurt their candidate statewide.
This is exactly what I expect the Sanders campaign to do and why I expect Warren to underperform.
If not viable in first round, work the second round but stand firm. Leave or participate in further business if interested your choice.
Other candidates will have other strategies.
