(14,732 posts)I don't think Obama could have done more (except perhaps standing on his head) to try and bring the country together. The problem is that you can't reconcile when one of the rwo parties has absolutely NO interest in reconciling. Instead the Rethugs, flush with testosterone from Turtle McConnell made a point of letting Obama know that he could expect exactly ZERO cooperation in anything. Hard to blame Obama for that.

(182,968 posts)There was just too much change for them to handle. Obama offered olive branch after olive branch but you had Mitch saying ON THE SENATE FLOOR, that his goal was one term (Garland at the end was just a dick move), Rush saying he was rooting for failure, hell they lost it over Roberts screwing up the oath and demanded a do-over. The media made Teabaggers the lead story every morning, blurred the bailout (9/11- Iraq War too to some people) between W and Obama, and RARELY reported on the scope and size of the recovery.
Obama dated mentioned that there were more sides to issues than just the white cops side. Oh and Gay became okay.
It was just too much.

July 22, 2011 Thom Hartmann Radio Program: "I think one of the reasons that the president has been able to move so far to the right is that there is no primary opposition to him, and I think it would do this country a good deal of service if people started thinking about candidates out there to begin contrasting what is a progressive agenda as opposed to what Obama is doing. At this point, I have not (encouraged anyone), but I am now giving thought to it. There are a lot of smart, honest, progressive people who I think can be good presidents."

This one is especially striking because it sounds so dang familiar:
Confronted with his support for a progressive challenge to Obama in 2011, Sanders said Saturday he campaigned very hard for Obama in 2008 and 2012. Thats not how Obama aides remember it.

(31,537 posts)the political environment he was working with. He made some mistakes, but he was also faced with obstruction that I never imagined. Every time he reached out to Republicans he was rebuffed. You can't pull people together unless they wish it.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City and owner of several media outlets, thinks its time that Americans get behind President Donald Trump and make it work.
Democratic opponents of Trump need to get over themselves, Bloomberg argued during an interview on ABCs The View. The public has spoken, whether you like the results or not, he said.

(5,445 posts)the nation by Republicans and fellow travelers. The thing is that these nefarious folks are actually worse than run-of-the-mill racists--they wanted to use race to divide to gain power, though they would have used anything at hand to accomplish their goals, it was just that race was so accessible for them.
Any time Obama would address racial inequality these GOP-led forces would distort the effort into one with the fake story that Obama was biased, building resentment.
