That boat must have hit in just the right spot - and MSNBC keeps changing the number of people they're looking for...

I used to drive semis and I have crossed a few sketchy bridges in my day and I always had nightmares about the bridges collapsing under me. Even to this day I will not stop on a bridge of any size.

Editing to add an article about it with pictures.. I grew up in Tampa, and one morning in 1980 I got up, turned on the TV and the Sunshine Skyway had been hit by a tanker with one whole middle section collapsed. It happened in the early morning, rush hour traffic was just beginning. I think about 40 people died. There's a picture out there of a car with its front tires at the edge of the pavement of the remaining bridge, about to fall into the gaping maw of the collapsed section. Makes my palms sweat to even think about it. The Skyway didn't collapse as completely as this bridge did, though. Thank goodness it was so early in the morning.
The first picture at the article is that photo. My memory was that it was hanging off the edge, but it's not.

And yikes, I remember the Sunshine Skyway Bridge! My grandmother used to winter in Florida and we'd visit, usually for Christmas. I'm not a fan of bridges and that bridge could give me nightmares! I never knew it had a collapse, too! That's just awful, obviously worse than this one. I just hope that they find all seven of those people.

I moved to Tampa in the mid-1980s from the Keys, so driving over long bridges was nothing new to me. That said, I only drove over the old Skyway bridge once on a clear day, and for me that was a white knuckle ride. It rekindled memories of going over the old Bahia Honda bridge in the Keys before it was replaced in the mid 1970s (that raised bridge was part of Flagler's original Overseas Railroad). I used to plaster myself on the floorboard of the car my parents were driving when we went over the old Bahia Honda. Even going over the new Skyway bridge today gives me a small jolt of anxiety.

I saw the accident scene for the Key Bridge, and notice there were only a couple of dolphins (groups of concrete pilings, not the mammal) protecting the stanchions. I'm guessing when they build the replacement bridge, concrete dolphins will be put those in place to ensure another collision does not happen.

I lived in Florida from age 2 on, and at one point we lived in Sarasota, so I know I went over the Skyway and don't remember it. But this was my first time that I remember. Traffic was all on the one remaining complete span, so as you were driving alongside the other lane, it just looked like a no-traffic thing, until suddenly at the top span...the other lane just...disappears...
That was a terrifying thing to see - particularly for me, with my extreme fear of heights!

Not discounting the loss of life and commuter pain this is causing, but Baltimore is a major port on the east coast with lots of cargo and transfers to rail. I can't imagine the bridge structure in the water is going to not impact trade in and out of the port areas.

Major economic impacts to the supply chain (again) and we all know what that means for consumers.

Harbor Tunnel (I-95) and the old tunnel that I can't remember the name (I-895). I don't think I've ever been over that bridge. Key Bridge was used by trucks since the tunnels have restrictions. Most folks are on the west side of Baltimore and there's not much as you go east.

Not that the bridge being gone isn't a super inconvenience, it's just one of the relatively lesser ways to get around the area. I think the boat traffic if the river is impassable until the remove the wreckage, is far more detrimental to the economics of the area than the bridge. Probably should be rebuilt as a suspension bridge so there is a larger area to pass under it.

Not to mention that, given the choice, I'd have taken the tunnels, too. I have visited since my uncle lived in the area, but my Dad drove. And I definitely remember one very long bridge. But since my uncle grew up here in New York, he usually brought the family up here to visit my Dad, my aunt and my grandmother.

We accidentally went over a bridge in that area on vacation and that puppy went straight up in the air with a deck made of metal mesh you could see through.

Never been so fucking scared of a bridge in my life.

Edited to add that seing photos of it before catastrophe it is not the same bridge.

This event is something out of nightmares. I hope everyone involved survives and send wishes for peace to those families impacted.

I hope all the people are able to get out alive.

This should be blamed on Republicans always voting against our country's infrastructure. This is a real consequence of their 40 year attack on our country and the people in it.

Trump passed nothing for infrastructure, and MOST OF HIS "CONGRESSMEN", voted against Biden's big F_$%ing deal infrastructure.

The Republican party hate America, that's why they won't fund it.
