I was just watching Chelsea Handler tracing her roots through...
her German father. She knew her mother was Jewish, but had no idea if her father was s Nazi, or just caught up in things. Turns out he was basically a draftee and with little or no Nazi feelings.
But what really got to me was his treatment as a POW. After the Depression and months on the Russian front, he was miraculously transferred to the South of France where his unit surrendered to Allied troops. He ended up at a POW camp in Iowa where he had a great time, possibly what convinced him to bring his wife over here and start fresh.
Reminded me of another German I met in Bad Kreuznach who stayed in Germany but told me of the beautiful US West he enjoyed. I thought he came over on a tour, but was surprised when he said he was a POW.

I set up my home page the way I like it and it disappears.
Some email disappears.
I can't change my default search engine. Google is all.
No idea where the downloaded file system is hiding. I download a book or mag article and it disappears unless it's a gif.
Things pop up when and where I don't expect them and I can't get back to where I was.

I remember the "duck and cover" silliness of the 50s and our attitudes back then, but I can't imagine what it's doing to kids today. There is no comparison between the geopolitical fantasies of nuclear war with the Soviets and actually seeing dead kids around you, and with politicians just waving it away.
It wasn't easy, but we grew out of the Cold War idiocy and yet here we are again.

But, with all the end times talk, it's forgotten that in human affairs we generally bounce from side to side. Remember that much of the background theory of our democracy came from not only Greece and Rome, but French thought. Curiously, shortly after our Constitution, came the French Revolution and then Napolean.
Throughout history there has always been the conflict between holders of power. Wars make it obvious, but the Reagan types hide it well. Find a gut fear in the population and keep pulling on the scar until they forget the real cause of their fear. And the work involved facing it.
