Mild winter resulting in nightmarish tick season in Michigan

(Detroit Free Press) Ticks are on the move this spring, and watch out — tick activity is climbing as the climate changes. Mild winters and summer heat mean a longer tick season with an early start, according to experts. This year, Michigan saw tick activity in March, earlier than the typical peak.

As tick season sets in across Michigan, let's take a look at the parasitic arachnids and what you need to know to stay safe from tick-related diseases this season.

Tick season

Tick activity in Michigan typically increases between April and September, during the warmer months. However, tick season began earlier than usual this season, including winter activity, due to mild winter weather. Several common types of ticks can be found in Michigan this season, including:

* American dog tick: Active from May to November in Michigan forests and grassy areas.

* Blacklegged tick: Present on low forest vegetation and along human and animal trails throughout the state.

* Lone star tick: Sometimes present in wooded and grassy areas across Michigan.

* Woodchuck tick: Also known as the groundhog tick, it is often found on pets near dens of skunks and woodchucks throughout the state.

More Repugs arraigned for 2020 election hijinks in Michigan

Lambert Junttila and former elections clerk arraigned for alleged breach of voter data
BY: KYLE DAVIDSON - MAY 14, 2024 6:48 AM

(Michigan Advance) Attorney Stefanie Lambert Junttila and former Adams Township. Clerk Stephanie Scott were arraigned on Monday in District Court 2B in Hillsdale County.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced charges against the pair on Wednesday, accusing Scott and Lambert Junttila of allowing an unauthorized computer examiner to access voter data concerning the 2020 election, including non-public information.

Scott and Lambert Junttila each pleaded not guilty. Both were released on personal recognizance.

According to the Department of Attorney General, Scott reportedly disregarded multiple instructions from the state director of elections to present the Adams Township tabulator to an authorized vendor for maintenance, withholding the voting machine until it was retrieved by the state police pursuant to a search warrant. The Department of Attorney General also alleges Lambert Juntilla illicitly transmitted data on the 2020 General Election from the Adams Township electronic poll book under Scott’s direction. .................(more)

Medical school graduates are avoiding states with abortion bans. Experts warn it could cause chaos

(Salon) Abortion restrictions might be influencing where medical students apply for residency programs, which could have stark implications across entire state healthcare systems, with some doctors warning it could essentially unravel entirely.

According to a new analysis by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Research and Action Institute, updated data from 2023 found a continued decline in medical students applying to residency programs located in states with restrictive abortion laws. The trend aligned with a similar one that the research institute saw in the first year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

“The biggest takeaway is that for a second year, we are seeing decreases in the number of applications in states where abortion bans are in place,” Kendal Orgera, a senior research analyst at AAMC told Salon in a phone interview. “And that varies by specialty — for OBGYNs in states where abortion is banned has decreased even more and this shows a big implication of the potential workforce of the future.”

As of May 2, 2024, abortions are nearly totally banned in 14 states across the country. Some, but not all, have narrow exceptions, such as preventing the death of the mother, when the pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, or when there is a lethal fetal anomaly. While many of these states don’t make it technically illegal for a pregnant person to get an abortion, they do penalize providers, like OBGYNs or family medicine doctors, for conducting them. ..............(more)

Man acquitted in Whitmer kidnap plot case running as a Republican for Wexford Co. sheriff

(Michigan Advance) Less than nine months ago, Eric Molitor was facing the possibility of a lengthy prison term. Now he’s hoping to become Wexford County’s top law enforcement officer.

On Thursday, the 40-year-old Cadillac man filed papers to run against Wexford County Sheriff Trent Taylor in the Republican primary in August.

Molitor, along with twin brothers William and Michael Null, were acquitted in September 2023 of providing support for a terrorist act and a weapon charge related to the plot to kidnap and execute Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Specifically, they were accused of supporting leaders of the plan by participating in military-style drills and traveling to see Whitmer’s vacation home in northern Michigan.

Molitor and the Null brothers were the last of 14 men to face charges in state or federal court for participation in the plot. In all, nine were convicted and five were acquitted, including Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta. ...............(more)

Mercedes workers in Alabama face anti-union message 'barrage' before election

(Guardian UK) The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is setting its sights on its next big union victory in the south, at two Mercedes-Benz plants in Vance and Woodstock, Alabama.

Coming off the historic union election win at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 5,200 workers are to begin voting in their union election from 13 May to 17 May. The UAW’s recent win at Volkswagen to represent about 4,300 workers was one of the biggest union election wins in manufacturing in the past 16 years.

“It’s just time for a change,” said Kay Finklea, a quality inspector who has worked at the Mercedes-Benz plant for 23 years.

Finklea said that the pay, benefits, and work hours had stagnated or worsened since she started and the balance between work and life had deteriorated. ................(more)

Dobbs Has Created a Health Care Apocalypse

(Mother Jones) Dr. Leilah Zahedi-Spung spent four years in medical school, four years in an OB-GYN residency, and three years in a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship learning how to care for high-risk pregnant patients. In her decade-plus of medical training, she learned that in some cases, the only rational and responsible option for medical intervention is an emergency abortion. In July 2021 she moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and discovered she was the sole provider in her area trained to perform second-trimester dilatation and evacuation abortions for patients who needed them to survive.

But in 2022, the Supreme Court delivered its Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, and Tennessee’s trigger ban—written in preparation for the possibility that the Supreme Court would overturn Roe—went into effect a month later. Suddenly, providing an abortion in Tennessee became an immediate Class C felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. There were no exceptions, even when an abortion was necessary to save a life or prevent serious bodily harm. Only after being arrested could a physician provide something called an “affirmative defense” to fight the charges. (Eight months after the trigger law took effect, the GOP governor signed a bill allowing abortions in limited medical emergencies.)

....(snip)....

“As more clinicians leave those states, as more maternity care deserts happen, we will see poorer outcomes,” says Dr. Stella Dantas, an OB-GYN in Oregon and the president-elect of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. “And I do think we will see more maternal mortality just by the sheer fact that we won’t have providers even trained to take care of some of these obstetric emergencies.” Indeed, 64 percent of practicing OB-GYNs who responded to a KFF (formerly the Kaiser Family Foundation) survey said the Dobbs ruling has worsened maternal mortality.

In the before times, a high-risk obstetrics patient might consider having an abortion to nearly eliminate their potential maternal health risks, or even just seek more frequent monitoring to decrease them. But what happens when there are fewer clinicians left to treat sicker pregnant patients—and higher numbers of them—as birth rates rise in abortion-banned states? Data from states tell the story. ..............(more)

Donald Trump's obsession with control is backfiring on his lawyers in court

Donald Trump's obsession with control is backfiring on his lawyers in court
Trump can't even let his defense lawyers do their job — yet we're to believe he didn't direct hush money payments?

(Salon) ....There is one person who very much is denying the sex with Daniels: Donald J. Trump. Even worse, he's making his lawyers, who are paid for with Grandma MAGA's small-dollar donations, deny it as well. During opening statements, Trump's lead lawyer, Todd Blanche, said Daniels is offering a "false claim of a sexual encounter." In her cross-examination of Daniels, Susan Necheles, another defense attorney, repeatedly accused Daniels of lying, even sneeringly saying, "You have a lot of experience in making phony stories about sex appear to be real." (Daniels' retort: "The sex in the films is very much real, just like what happened to me in that room." )

Perhaps Cruz, who is an experienced attorney, was wishcasting that Trump's lawyers had gone with a better strategy of just admitting the sex happened. By the end of Thursday, Trump's lawyers were likely quietly agreeing with Cruz, as Judge Juan Merchan ruled, yet again, that the Daniels testimony was necessary precisely because Trump's team refuses to concede on the issue of their client's non-celibacy.

....(snip)....

As the reporters at the New York Times recently wrote, "Trump views himself as his own best legal strategist." They also report that he's boxed his lawyers into an "absolutist" defense, to appease a client "who despises weakness and is allergic to anything but praise from the people around him." But, as legal experts told the Times, claiming your client is a perfect angel who has never done anything wrong tends to backfire with juries because it's not credible. Instead, experts explained, attorneys tend to prefer the "My client might not be a nice guy, but he’s no criminal" defense.

Trump's current micromanaging of his defense team certainly cuts against the claims that he would have let his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, arrange hush money payments that ended up costing Trump more than $200,000 without Trump's knowledge. But it's also creating all manner of logistical problems for his defense team, including this most recent screw-up that allowed Daniels to testify at great length. ..................(more)

Deputies seize yet more animals from The Devoted Barn

(Detroit Free Press) OCEOLA TWP. — More animals belonging to a troubled rescue operator have been seized, this time from an Oceola Township farm in Livingston County.

The Devoted Barn founder, Melissa Borden, 50, already faces felony animal cruelty and abandonment charges in Livingston and Genesee counties. In Livingston County, deputies seized farm animals from a property in Tyrone Township. In Genesee County, an investigation was launched into dog housing in Grand Blanc.

On Tuesday, April 30, deputies with LCSO executed a search warrant at a farm on Mack Road in Oceola Township, another site where the rescue keeps animals.

"We ended up seizing five animals on the direction of a veterinarian," Lt. Chad Sell told The Daily on Thursday. ................(more)

Florida Man Whines About His Ruined Reputation After Pulling Gun On Uber Driver

Police in Milton, Florida arrested a man after he pulled a gun on an Uber driver earlier this week who was dropping his daughter off. Sean Hollonbeck forced the driver out of the car and onto the ground and has since been charged with false imprisonment and aggravated assault with a weapon, WEAR News reports. After pulling him out of the car, Hollonbeck reportedly forced the driver to lie down in the roadway, show his driver’s license so he could photograph it, and allow him to photograph his license plate, his Uber account and the address where he picked up Hollonbeck’s daughter.

As it turned out, the 13-year-old snuck out of the house Saturday night and took an Uber to Pensacola, about 30 minutes away. When he discovered she’d snuck out, he reportedly called both the Santa Rosa County and Escambia County sheriff’s offices, but didn’t get much help from either department. So when she got back home, he made the only logical decision and pulled a gun on the completely innocent Uber driver.

It’s not entirely clear what kind of gun Hollonbeck used. WEAR News said it was a .22 rifle, but Fox 35 Orlando reports it was actually an AR-15. Either one could be deadly at close range, and having any gun pointed in your face is going to make for a bad day.

If you assumed Hollonbeck would have seen the error of his ways after his arrest and being fired from his job, though, you couldn’t possibly be more wrong. He is doubling down, insisting that he did everything right. ................(more)

Targeting the voting booth for Trump is a massive operation to return the authoritarian to the White House

(Salon) In his recent interview with Time magazine, Donald Trump shared a litany of false grievances and real promises should he return to the White House. His promises include, among other things, “authoritarian power grabs, administrative cronyism, mass deportations of the undocumented, harassment of women over abortion, trade wars and vengeance brought upon his rivals and enemies.”

....(snip)....

Project 2025 is a coalition of 100 organizations under the leadership of the far-right Heritage Foundation with the goal of institutionalizing Trumpism. Last fall the Washington Post wrote: “Trump and his allies have begun mapping out specific plans for using the federal government to punish critics and opponents should he win a second term; with the former president naming individuals he wants to investigate or prosecute and his associates drafting plans to potentially invoke the Insurrection Act on the first day in office to allow him to deploy the military against civil demonstrators.”

Authoritarian expert and author of Strongman: Mussolini to the Present Ruth Ben-Ghat describes Project 2025 as “a plan for an authoritarian takeover of America that goes by a deceptively neutral name. It brings together all of the ideological strands that supported Trump during his first presidency, and more who have joined the battle since then,” such as white Christian nationalists and far-right Catholics who favor the lessening or abolition of the separation of Church and State.

....(snip)....

Rolling Stone claims that “Trump and his allies have been working since his 2020 defeat to game the system in his favor ahead of a third run at the White House.” These include “auditioning lawyers” to challenge the 2024 election; “working to stop states from using data provided by Electronic Information Center (ERIC) to spot voting irregularities and identify unregistered voters''; and “trying to promote a MAGA version of ERIC” as some kind of alternative. ................(more)
