https://www.theguardian.com/news/gallery/2022/apr/28/night-prayers-and-holocaust-remembrance-thursdays-best-photosIt's interesting and informative to see names, faces and places of the movers, shakers
and fakers of today's news.
Earlier today I posted an OP regarding my getting '403 Forbidden' messages when
trying to post a reply.
You can find that thread here: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100216633533
I've updated that thread to show that my whole problem was due to the site I was
trying to link to. Boo-Hoo, who knew? Now I do. It's always something.
I consistently got a '403 Forbidden' message when attempting to reply to this DU
OP: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100216633464
I rebooted my browser then restarted my computer but that was no help. I had no
problem replying to another OP.
NOTE: I finally managed to post a reply after I chose a new site to link to. That was my
whole problem.
CBC*: AFN** national chief asks UN to investigate Canada's role in residential schools.
*Canadian Broadcasting Corporation **Assembly of First Nations
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/afn-national-chief-united-nations-requests-investigation-1.6430318
[Assembly of First Nations National Chief RoseAnne Archibald asked the United Nations on Monday to launch an investigation into Canada's possible role in violations of human rights associated with residential schools.
Archibald said she wants the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, along with other UN officials, to probe Canada's role in the residential school system in response to the reported discovery near former residential school sites of hundreds of unmarked graves believed to contain the remains of children.
"I don't call them schools anymore because no school I ever attended had children buried in unmarked graves," Archibald said.
"Canada and the other UN member states must not look away."]
There's more text and photos at the link. I'd also like to remind everyone that the U.S.,
Australia and other countries also have had residential schools.

Al Jazeera: 'Melissa Lucio: Court stays execution of Texas death row prisoner.
Melissa Lucio has maintained her innocence since she was convicted of murdering her two-year-old daughter.'
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/4/26/new-evidence-prompts-court-to-stay-execution-of-texas-woman
[A court in Texas has granted a stay of execution for Melissa Lucio, who was convicted of murdering her two-year-old daughter, after new evidence emerged.
Lucio was set to be executed by lethal injection on Wednesday, and would have become the first Hispanic woman to be put to death in Texas. However, the appeals court on Monday granted a request by Lucios lawyers to delay the execution so a lower court can review her claims that new evidence would exonerate her.
Prosecutors have maintained that Lucio abused her daughter, Mariah, leading to her death in 2007. Her lawyers have maintained the child died from injuries she sustained falling down a steep flight of stairs.
I am grateful the court has given me the chance to live and prove my innocence, Lucio said in a statement provided by the Innocence Project, whose lawyers are helping defend her. Mariah is in my heart today and always.]

CBC*: Former Guantanamo Bay detainee sues Canada for $35 million over 14-year imprisonment
*Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/guantanamo-bay-detainee-lawsuit-canada-1.6428886
[A man who spent 14 years imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay is suing the Canadian government for $35 million for its alleged role in the series of events that led up to his detainment, during which he was tortured.

'Enhanced interrogation techniques' used:
The Attorney General of Canada, which represents the government, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.
During his detainment, Slahi wrote several books, including a memoir that formed the basis for the 2021 film The Mauritanian. Slahi is now a writer-in-residence at a Dutch theatre.
At the time of Slahi's arrest in 2002, officials suspected him of having links to terrorism, in part because he prayed at the same Montreal mosque as the attempted "Millennium bomber," Ahmed Ressam. Slahi said he had also travelled twice to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet-backed Afghan government in the early 1990s.]
There's much more text and a photo at the link. I've read about this particular story
before and I'm posting this today because I think it's important for governments and
individuals to accept and bear responsibility for errors that are made. I have edited
the text to meet our DU 4-paragraph rule.
