They saw what he was like when he was campaigning. They knew that he was more interested in publicity than in policy. They also probably knew about the allegations regarding sexual assaults during his semester in college and the fact that he lied about getting into the Naval academy (or whichever academy it was) and about his Paralympics phoniness. And they didn't care.
