In reply to the discussion: Pink Floyd Feud Spills Out Into Public As Roger Waters, David Gilmour Go At it [View all]Johonny
(21,136 posts)The Wall is semi-autobiographical. Is Pink really Roger . . . well, yes and no. The Band members have talked extensively about the subject. But in context of other things Roger has said and done, one does wonder if Roger's very heavily covered inner fears of his inner fascist does get the better of him at times just as it gets Pink. As Rick Wright said, The Wall was like a therapy session for Roger that he needed to do, but Rick didn't feel he really needed to do it
If it wasn't for the Nips
Being so good at building ships
The yards would still be open on the Clyde
And that can't be much fun for them
Beneath the rising sun
With all their kids committing suicide
Sure, in context of the character, dropping the slur Nips seems natural. But the rest of the Floyd wasn't dropping a lot of racial slurs like that in their songs. It's a very Roger thing. You get a pass that it's art and the perspective of a character to some point, but once you start putting the star of David on your inflatable pig (offensive on several levels), people do get to reexamine things. And the Wall is semi-autobiographical. Where Roger ends and Pink as just a character begins is very blurred.
