Lakota and Dakota tribes lived near the Great Lakes and by the 16th/17th century they lived throughout the Upper Mississippi River region. By the end of the 17th century, they had been mostly pushed out of Great Lakes area by Anishnaabe and Cree tribes. In turn, the Lakota/Dakota tribes pushed the Arikara northwards and the Cheyenne westward.
I have had the chance to listen to a disussion between two college professors, one a member of the Ojibwe tribe and the other a Lakota tribe member. It was funny to listen to their gentle ribbing each other using historical events and generalizations.
