By the time of William 100+ years later, the Northmen had assimilated and married into the Frankish population. At that time the king of England, or at least the Anglo-Saxon part of it, was Harold Godwinson, a Saxon who had married into the Scandinavian family of King Canute of Denmark. The Danes of east Anglia had made peace with the Saxons of west Anglia, and Harold eventually became king of all of England. In the meantime, though, Harald Hardrada of Norway wanted to claim England, but was defeated and killed by Harold Godwinson's forces at the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, considered to be the end of the Viking era. A month later Harold Godwinson was defeated by William at Hastings.
