But of course that's not what he really thinks. It was just the heat of the moment, guys. He just got carried away, that's all. It's not a big deal, gosh.

Less flippantly, that excuse would never work for someone who started spouting racist bullshit. How often have we seen someone do exactly that and then say, "I got caught up in the heat of the moment, that's not who I am"? Plenty of times, and no one has bought it.

Mr. James didn't get "caught up in the heat of the moment". He didn't "misspeak". The mask slipped and he showed us who he really is. Columbia should show some spine and expel his ass, not just ban him from campus.
