And the Paris Peace Talks were progressing to the point where Nixon and Kissinger announced, just before the election, that American involvement in the Vietnam War would soon end. A perfect way to get the votes of the first group of 18-to-20-year-olds who could vote in a presidential election.

For his part, McGovern shot himself in the foot with the Eagleton controversy, and he wasn't particularly effective at getting his message out.
