8 years have passed and the country has moved thanks to people like Sanders.

But there's no evidence at all that Sanders had anything to do with it, especially since he was functionally invisible until a few months ago when for reasons of cynical political gain he decided to be a Democrat.

Yes, and the leaf floating on the surface probably thinks that it steers the course of the river.
