3. In a sense, the civil war was about states rights...the right to enslave people.

These states insisted on their right to maintain slavery.
So, it was about states rights for white slave owners, but not for the right of black people to live free.
Those fine church going christian white slave owners didn't feel that black people were actually people at all.
It was a convenient belief for them; one that absolved them from all the sins they committed as part of the process of being a slave holder.
For them, slaves were property; like any other farm animal. And so they could pray as good children of God on Sunday, and effectively act like children of satan the rest of the time.
