I grabbed dog food and left jewelry behind, which was stupid at first glance, because I could buy dog food just a few miles away. This was partially because of the fog of being awakened so early and suddenly. But it made me feel good about what my priorites were.

A few years later, we were evacuated again, this time with a few hours notice and in the afternoon. Let me tell you, there's a big difference between having five minutes or a few hours to get out. OP is doing the right thing taking advanage of having the time to plan things.
