Chicago usually has a higher murder rate than houston, ~35% higher, and of course is the most severe violent crime, but murder is only about 2% of a cities total violent crime. Warmer weather tends to enhance crime rates.

Chicago & Houston have similar populations between about 2 & 2.5 millions, similar demographics, sorta sister port cities. Chicago is cold in winter, houston generally not.

2022 Compare Crime Rates: Chicago, IL vs Houston, TX

.............................Chicago, IL Houston, TX United States
violent crime rate ......49.9 ......... 50.4 ...... 22.7
property crime rate ...46.3 ........ 63.2 ...... 35.4

Guns doing great work in houston, eh? Chicago gets dgu's too (defensive gun uses)
.. violent crime & murder rate parity with chicago, but houston has 40% higher property crime.
Since both together constitute 'total crime rate', houston has a higher total crime rate than chicago.
Houston, Texas had the highest robbery rate [2022, Cities >500k, safehome link]

Houston has had higher total crime rates than chicago for the past decade, as well as most all those years for violent crime rates.
When will the right start harping on Houston for having such high violent crime rates & total crime rates?
Yes, Houston votes democratic, ~55% to 45% for Hillary (as Dallas & most all major cities), but Texas gun laws generally apply.

Sep 2021, Texas passed a new law that allows residents who are 21 or older and meet certain requirements to carry handguns without a license or training.. known as “Constitutional Carry,” took effect Sep 2021
... permitless concealed carry and open carry is legal for anyone at least 21 who may lawfully possess a handgun.

Can I open carry in downtown Houston?
June, 2021 (known as the Firearm Carry Act) .. 21 and older, who can legally possess a firearm, are able to carry a handgun – concealed, or openly in a holster – in non-prohibited public places.

Texas has a stand your ground law ... Texas has no law restricting sales or purchases of multiple firearms.

A person of any age may possess a firearm such as at a firing range. Texas has no laws regarding possession of any firearm regardless of age.

Texas does not maintain a registry of firearms. The federal govt also does not maintain a general registry..

Are ak47 legal in Texas? Texas has no law restricting assault weapons
