Some campaigns work in a bubble and don't let their candidate see the hard news. If that's the case, his campaign could be feeding him a boatload of BS.

In all reality, though, Romney has outside sources, namely his family, and I'm guessing they've been candid with him and told him his standing and it's not good. It's probably why he picked Ryan.
