Democratic Primaries
In reply to the discussion: All of this Sanders dread is astounding to me [View all]grantcart
(53,061 posts)247. That's because your OP displays a rather plum mangling of facts
1) FDR never campaigned on radical economic restructuring. He advocated a number of short term programs to provide immediate relief. This was pre Keynes and FDR still advocated for a balanced budget. His signature program Social Security was not initially introduced and represented a progressive but not radical move.
I consider FDR the greatest American President for his overall leadership but his greatest economic legacy was re establishing capitalism with massive war expenditures.
Every repeat every Democrat that has advocated for greater middle class taxes (Mondale) or massive economic wealth redistribution (McGovern) resulted in catastrophic landslides.
Let me repeat this: whenever Democrats have advocated Sanders style campaigns we have netted exactly one state (Minnesota/Massachusetts).
The American people can be talked into higher taxes during governance (a la Obama) but they will reject an mass during a campaign.
HW Bush experienced the greatest fall from the highest approval to losing the election because of middle class taxes (read my lips)
I have been involved in 4 campaigns IL liberal Washington State to introduce a small income tax to increase funds for education and relieve sales tax.
Each time the voters rejected it by 40 points. Polling showed that even Democrats didn't support it.
The last attempt was run by Bill Gates Sr who funded an initiative to tax the top 1%. It failed by 30 points.
It is possible to run a campaign advocating a well defined program that will be supported by modest taxes but any campaign that centers on massive wealth redistribution is dead on arrival.
Sanders $ 55 Trillion give away will cost $ 10,000 per person per year, after you have raided the billionaires and taken all their money.
Warren's plan is very sensible and funded. It is extremely progressive. Sender's "plans" are wild and cannot be achieved.
I have lived in countries that tried idiotic populism here is what happens when they do get elected (and Sanders has no chance)
1) over promise
2) under deliver
3) spend beyond the county's means and leave the country with crippling debt for a generation.
Please do everyone a favor and do NOT link the greatest Democratic leader with the idiotic Sanders who he would have hated.
FDR is the consummate Democratic establishment leader and Sanders despises the Democratic establishment and has made it clear he is running against it.
Finally I am very close to many people in the Kelly campaign. Everyone feels that if the stars align right we could elect Kelly and have 2 Democratic Senators winning by 3-4%. With a Sanders nomination no one, repeat not a single informed political expert believes we would be competitive in AZ.
We go from being competitive in both a Senate seat and electoral college.
But what the he'll you got a lot of recs and that's what really counts. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who don't understand that real Democrats FDR/Kennedys/Cliinton/ Carter share nothing with this interloper who will reduplicate McGovern and Mondale fantastic election of one state each.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
