2. Well, my father's nearing 65 and I wish he hadn't retired. |
|
Of course, that has everything to do with the fact that he constantly whines about how he wishes he hadn't retired either.

7. A little history on SS. |
|
When SS originated most people were dead by age 65. Today I think it is 75. I am 74 and by observing my friends I think most people can work to 70. This does not mean that the SS age should be raised to 70. It just means that it can be raised without severe consequences.

10. Also the Reagan law has the Full Benefit Age grading to 67 - any increase to 70 begins in 2030 |
|
and could be phased in over 36 years.
Since the early retirement age never changes and remains age 62, the only thing a later retirement age means is a lower benefit at 62" because you are suddenly more years "early" compared to the full benefit age.
An age increase makes sense only if together with removal of wage cap and a decrease in the employee portion of the payroll tax of 1.5% (a annual decrease of $150 per every 10,000 of wages)

9. That might have to happen--lifespans are longer, people are healthier into |
|
their sixties and seventies--raising it incrementally is not that crazy of an idea.

11. The FIRST thing we need to do is remove the FICA cap. |
|
Any income over the cap isn't taxed for FICA (SS). This year, I believe it's around $103k.
Removing that cap wouldn't bring SS back to complete solvency long-term, but it would help.

12. Well,that should play well.Not. |
|
Someone should stick Glen Beck on the assembly line at 65 years of age(or any other labor intensive job) and time how many minutes it takes for him to drop to his knees and beg for forgiveness.
