Tough to Campaign for Hillary, Bill Clinton Says
By Katharine Q. Seelye
LEXINGTON, S.C. — Bill Clinton, who has been creating a stir on the campaign trail in South Carolina, told his first audience this morning that campaigning for his wife was much harder than campaigning for himself.
He made the admission during a low-key forum here in this Columbia suburb in response to a friendly question from a woman in the audience of about 100 people, most of them white.
The woman said Mrs. Clinton “knows the issues,” but, “I want her to stop taking the bait from Obama. We don’t need any more bickering.” She said she understood the temptation to respond when Mr. Obama says something, but she wished Mrs. Clinton would just ignore it.
“That’s pretty good advice,” Mr. Clinton responded, drawing a chuckle from the audience. He started to say something about his wife, but then stopped himself.
“That’s probably good advice for me, too,” Mr. Clinton responded. That prompted the audience to applaud.
“This is a lot harder for me than campaigning for myself ever was,” he said. “When I was running, I didn’t give a rip what anybody said about me. It’s weird, you know, but if you love somebody, you’d think they’d be good — it’s harder.”
