A. You need a cd drive to install Win2K. B. You CAN do an upgrade from 98 to 2K without losing settings and documents. HOWEVER, I HAVE done UNSUCCESSFUL upgrades when 2K didn't like something it saw and arbitrarily wiped everything out.
It's doable, but chancy. I recommend (once you replace your cd drive) you do a backup and THEN give an upgrade a try.
Notes: 2K will require different device drivers- some will be available within the upgrade, some will not. Be prepared to search online for necessary drivers.
Some programs will also need to be uninstalled before the upgrade- antivirus programs, among others. Also, your printer will need to be uninstalled then reinstalled with 2K drivers after the upgrade.
The upgrade may break some programs. As the upgrade begins, it will inventory your programs and tell you what the incompatibilities are. PAY ATTENTION to what it says. Failure to do so can corrupt your installation beyond repair.
