Arizona Republicans were on a roll last week, or so they thought. After passing the 'Show Me Your Papers' law, they were all set to pass their Birther Bill into Law which would have required presidential candidates to show their birth certificates.
There is no doubt who that bill was aimed at. But what were they thinking? Even Freepers have distanced themselves from the Birthers. This was Orly Taitz territory!
Anyhow, no doubt reeling from the reaction to the passage of the 'Show Me Your Papers' bill, they have decided not to pass the Birther Bill.
Arizona 'birther bill' won't get Senate voteA bill to require presidential candidates to show their birth certificates to get on the state's ballot has been set aside at the Arizona Legislature.
With lawmakers working toward adjournment of their annual session, the sponsor of the bill used to resurrect the proposal said Thursday it wouldn't get a Senate vote because some fellow Republicans don't support it.
The bill is an outgrowth from some Obama critics' doubts over whether he was born in the United States. Hawaii officials have repeatedly confirmed Obama's citizenship, and his Hawaiian birth certificate has been made public, along with newspaper birth notices.
The House narrowly approved the measure last week, sending it to the Senate.
........
Democrats are united against the bill, and Harper said four or five majority Senate Republicans also have indicated they are not willing to vote it.
But it seems obvious that what looked like a brilliant idea last week, doesn't seem like such a good idea this week, a fact that was reluctantly admitted to by Bob Burns, Senate President a few days ago:
Senate President Bob Burns, R-Peoria, said he hadn't made a decision on whether to keep the bill from being considered, but he acknowledged telling a supporter of the bill that he questioned whether the Legislature needed "the controversy it would create."
Boycotts Work! And justifiable outrage does have an effect. I know there are good people in Arizona and I hope this ends quickly so the State doesn't have to suffer any loss of revenue or jobs and I also hope that any other states contemplating similar laws will be deterred after seeing the reaction to Arizona.
Well done everyone who protested the law. It was amazing to see so many people move so quickly to stop this right at the beginning:
More than 60,000 people rallied against Arizona's new anti-immigrant law in Los AngelesDemonstrators in 80 cities join in May Day rally against Arizona's anti-immigrant lawImmigration activists, galvanized by Arizona's legal crackdown on the undocumented, took to the streets from coast to coast Saturday in a May Day demand for federal reform.
More than 60,000 people turned out at the biggest rally in Los Angeles, where Cuban-born singer Gloria Estefan delivered the day's refrain: Immigrants are hardworking people, not criminals.
At the White House, three dozen demonstrators - including Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) - were arrested after refusing police orders to move.
They called on President Obama to address the issue as part of the demonstrations in 80 cities across 40 states.
