1. As I understand it.. the firefighters are like a family in NYC...
and the older, wiser, FATHERLY firefighteres left in droves to retire after 9/11. Why? Becuase their retirement amount is figured based on the number of hours they worked in the last year. So, with all the OT after 9.11, it was foolish to stick around a year and lose those numbers for retirement.

This story makes me suspect that maybe the brotherhood of the firefighters has broken down a bit... having lost soooooooo many FATHERS.

Very sad.
