The acting police chief in the northern Iraqi town of Samarra has been assassinated by gunmen.

Gunmen opened fire on Mohammed al-Badri as he travelled in his car near Samarra. US troops said they took control of Samarra in a major offensive in October but rebels are still mounting attacks in and around the town, 62 miles north of Baghdad.

Insurgents have targeted policemen, security forces, politicians, American troops and election officials in violence that has prompted calls for a delay in Jan. 30 elections.

Elsewhere, US troops targeted by a roadside bomb opened fire, killing two Iraqi policemen and two civilians south of Baghdad late on Saturday.
