Even when I attended church fairly regularly, I regarded it with (rightful) abhorrence -- emblematic of suffering and pain. I have always regarded it as a reminder of the suffering - supposedly undertaken so others wouldn't have to. Why do I see these people more like the Romans than the early Christians?
