KUWAIT CITY (AFP) - US First Lady Laura Bush said on Thursday that war-ravaged Iraq was showing signs of improvement and told US troops stationed in neighbouring Kuwait that Americans were solidly behind them.

"We are seeing signs of progress as thousands of Iraqis are stepping out to work with the coalition soldiers," Bush told some 700 US troops at Ali Al-Salem Air Base, 70 kilometres (45 miles) northwest of Kuwait City.

The First Lady told the troops that despite some press criticism of the US mission in Iraq and Afghanistan, the American people are supporting their troops.

"I am here to tell you that the American people stand with our troops. No matter what you might read in the newspapers, people do appreciate the gift of freedom."
