That has always been the problem with Daschle. He isn't often free to actually argue a Democratic position; keeping his seat means being a moderate at best. We need someone who can actually argue from the Left without fear of angering his/her constituency.
As you say, it isn't rocket science. I still wonder how he ended up in the position in the first place. Someone MUST have brought up his geographical handcuffs at the time. What were they thinking?
