A friend of mine(a retired military mid-east expert) agrees:

"they've been killing each other for over 2500 years, and no matter what happens (we stay for 40 years or pull the troops out tommorrow), they will then start killing each other for another 2500 years."

This is no noble cause, we're "forcing" democracy on a country that doesn't want it.
