Jesus H. Christ! Last night more than 10,000 people perished in the biggest earthquake and tsunamis in recent memory -- and yet the rednecks among us "have tears streaming down their face" (from a tribute posted on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) because some bigoted, homophobic football player kicked the bucket?

One of the local newscasts here in Green Bay spent 15 minutes -- one half of the show -- offering every (palatable) angle about White's passing -- and then mentioned this natural disater and its repercussions in passing. (They also -- predictably -- glossed over White's outrageous speeches.)

If God is watching down on us, he's shaking his head in disappointment. He's wondering what he can do to reinforce that lesson about not being swayed by icons and false gods.

My only solace? During this evening's newscast another local station, WLUK, closed with a tribute to White, showing footage from his playing days. The music they decided to play in the background was "Measure Of A Man" -- sung by the very gay, very open Elton John.

Something tells me this wasn't a coincidence. Even though it's a FOX station, I might watch this newscast more often. Seems they've got a knack for subtle yet effective political statement.
