8. My son is a Marine,
but I would caution any parent about recruiters. Our son was 19 when he decided to enlist in the Marines. He had attended college very half-heartedly. We asked him to wait 4 months and then, if he still wanted to enlist, he had our support. We wanted to make sure he wasn't just joining because a couple of friends had joined or because he hated college. He's now been in two years and is happy with his decision. He's been to Iraq and is going back this January. He voted for Kerry.
That said, beware the recruiters. Make sure, as a parent, you know what your son/daughter is being told. A co-worker's son was recruited by the Marines, is at boot camp now, and is miserable. He was not physically fit enough to go...he's struggling...and now his attitude is negative. His recruiter rushed him and should have known he wouldn't be up to the physical training. My son's recruiter was very honest and reputable. Just make sure you're consulted and part of the decision. Young people can be very vulnerable and not aware of all the demands of a long-term commitment.
