Many people including a lot of career people seem prosperous. But when they look at their futures, there is a great deal of uncertainty. They are unwilling to rock the boat. In casual conversation, it is understood almost universally now that the war sucks and is a terrible drain and needless sacrifice (even among traditionally conservative demographics).
The middle class has been drained since 1972. The standard of living is going down not up. Demand for change requires increasing expectations while the American public has been steadily fed excuses for its declining standards for over 30 years.
