Most of us never bought the fantasy of the Bush presidency but for the rest of the world the charade is now wearing very thin. Cindy Sheehan’s vigil during Bush’s ill advised vacation has brought the focus of the world on his diminished stature and slipping grasp of reality. Beyond the obvious deterioration of his mental acumen and ability to speak coherently, with or without a teleprompter, he is plain and simply melting down.

The geniuses that figured out how to install this bumbler in the highest office in the land realized that to preserve the illusion of competency, a lot of time out was going to be required. The opening of Neverland East on Election Day 2000 was part of a carefully crafted plan to make our imaginary leader appear Reaganesque. Now his Texas hideout is looking more like the Branch Davidians’ besieged compound than the Western White House. The affable frat boy made president is now looking very Nixonesque. The showdown at the Crooked W Ranch is nearing a climax.

Bush’s nation building experiment is fizzling and may yet explode. Every day more and more mothers are getting the bad news that ultimately brought Cindy Sheehan to Texas and the world stage. The price of gasoline that was conveniently kept in check through the last election is now wreaking havoc on all sectors of the economy. While Bush pedals blissfully through the cow pies, real Americans are climbing on their bikes out of economic necessity. Our C student president is taking out his revenge on scholarship by discrediting science when it might be our only hope. The long delayed criminal investigation involving the Bush administration is now coming to a head.

If we make it through these converging crises we will long remember that when things got really bad, our leader went into hiding. Even the ridiculous photo ops of his “working vacation” do not mask the reality of a president running from the truth.
