12. I disagree with the submerged part
The right-wing has been openly advocating their agenda for decades. Pat Robertson wrote gleefully about it in 1994, in his book The Turning Tide. Newt et al. trumpeted their call to "take back the country". Their illegal efforts (eg, the Christian Coalition actively campaigning for Republicans and smearing Democrats) have been there for all to see. What happened is that Americans don't want to see.

Krugman says that one of the reasons * is getting away with what he is doing is because most people cannot believe that anyone would be so meanspirited as to do the things he is openly advocating. So he just does them, and the country shakes its collective head.

The problem lies with the populace, not the cabal. The cabal is merely taking advantage of its opportunity. But we are the ones giving it to them.
